I had an interesting new patient last week: 19 year old male with clinical diagnosis of schizophrenia. However, when they had a SPECT scan done of his brain, it appeared to be more consistent with carbon monoxide poisoning. Further questioning revealed that the year prior to the onset of “schizophrenia”, the family’s heater broke and everyone was exposed to carbon monoxide.

Oxygen toxicity, now renamed oxidative stress, is in very simple terms, too much oxygen in the body that is causing some adverse reaction. Too much oxygen can cause tremors, seizures and other nervous system effects. Sometimes it can affect the lungs short term as well.

The benefit of hyperbaric oxygen is that it creates some stress on the body. This stimulates a rebound effect, which creates healing. This is very similar to exercise. When you exercise, your muscle fibers break and then they rebuild as stronger muscles. So the question of toxicity or oxidative stress is really a question of balance. We want to create enough stress, but not too much stress.

Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy Helps to Heal The Cancer Faster

Let’s talk about cancer again. Cancer is such a scary word to some people. And sometimes the treatment can be more damaging than having the cancer in the first place. We are always looking to have the best treatment with the fewest side effects. We need to knock back the cancer without damaging our other cells.
Hyperbaric oxygen can help with that. There are some new studies showing that hyperbaric oxygen can help to lower the dose of therapy needed which allows for less side effects. There is actually a synergistic effect when you use the two modalities together. Hyperbaric oxygen can also reduce the side effects that you do get.

The Yanhee Hospital in Bangkok has 22 large chambers and 40 mild chambers. That’s 62 chambers in one hospital! Many people around the world travel to Thailand for elective surgery because of the quality of service as well as the inexpensive price tag. The doctors there find that the oxygen treatment before and after surgery gets better results and faster healing.

Another exciting story of how hyperbaric oxygen can help concussion. A patient recently returned from a trip to Italy. She tripped over some construction and fell head first into a brick wall: 2 black eyes, gash on her forehead and a concussion. 10 days later she comes into my office with blurry vision, fatigue, brain fog and an inability to work because she can’t focus.

The more we look, the more we find. At the conference, I attended last month, there were many different lectures on how Hyperbaric oxygen could help with this disease and that disease; and it’s all very exciting. However, many of the diseases that they lectured on were acute and traumatic situations that we don’t see very often in our clinic: extensive wounds after an accident, 1 day post-stroke etc. We tend to see more chronic issues in our clinic and that’s where I see hyperbaric oxygen shine. True, the dramatics of someone being brain-dead and recuperating is exhilarating, but for me, it’s more fulfilling to see someone who has had chronic pain for years get back to their life!

I was at a Hyperbaric Oxygen Conference a few weeks ago and learned some great new information. The world of Hyperbaric medicine is relatively new as a structured modality. We have been playing with pressure and oxygen for hundreds of years, but with the advance in our technology we can start to study the beneficial effects…and hopefully apply them. We have known for a while that Hyperbaric oxygen helps with burn victims and large wound healing.
