After last year's riots, I knew that there'd be more this year. When that final strike out happened, me and my wife took too our window and watched the 23rd and Harrison intersection. We saw lots of people running towards 24th. Meanwhile, a car was driving back and forth on Harrison, spinning donuts in the intersections. They started setting of fireworks a few blocks over, probably at 24th and Bryant or thereabouts. It was a pretty impressive show and went on for at least a minute. My wife grew bored at this point and went to bed.

But then I got a great idea: online police scanners! I ended up finding SF1033 (http://somafm.com/sf1033) and ScanSF (www.scansf.com). Then I found a bunch of live coverage of people in the crowd on Ustream: worthoftheworld and occupysflive. So I sat there until 1am, listening to 2 police scanners, 2 live video feeds, and watching the scansf chat. There were a couple of live feeds from legitimate new sources (NBC and some other station), but they were terrible. One was just a helicopter circling a bonfire on Market for a few hours. The other was just ground footage of people on a light pole.

worthoftheworld's stream was the most interesting. She was with another streamer in the Mission and followed most of the rioting as the police slowly took back Mission St and Valencia St block by block. Her bipolar attitude gave a couple of good moments: when the police are trying to clear the street, telling everyone to get/stay on the sidewalk, she begins screaming "fuck you" at the cops. When she gets stuck behind the police line and is trying to make it back in front, but they won't let her approach and cross from behind the police, she flips them off; one responds with "thank you", and she cackles and says "I win!" In a quieter moment as they walk between blocks, trying to get back to the action, they criticize the SFPD for allowing the riots to get to this state; not half an hour earlier they were criticizing them for their handling of the "celebrations".

Eventually her and her friend's battery dies and so does the juicy melodrama, just as the rioters begin to try and set fire to a building under construction at 19th and Valencia. The last few seconds of her feed show lumber being fed into a bonfire and people trying to light the lumber on fire and use it as torches. Talk about a cliffhanger. At this point, the police were starting to get reports of this and were scrambling to get someone down there to find out. I'm not entirely sure of the details between then and the end, but nothing big happened; I think it stayed as a bonfire in the street.

So, while all of this going on, someone decides to start firing a rifle out of a hotel window somewhere around 19th and Valencia or Mission. I think it was into the air (not into the crowd at least), since I didn't hear any reports of injuries. At some point, I think they arrested that guy.

Another intense moment was when some police were surrounded at 24th and Mission. The scanner lit up with them routing units to immediately assist. They got out OK though and it only lasted a few minutes.

Near the end of the night, a huge fight broke out on Valencia, somewhere between 19th and 22nd (I don't recall). It was called a 60 person melee. I think there's some video below (last link).

Anyways, here are some fun quotes:
At the start of the night, an awed female officer says, "Command...I'm at 7th and Mission...there's like...2000 people here."
"There's a car on fire on Mission between 18th and 19th...we're just gonna let it go out."
"We're escorting muni buses off [Mission or Market]". Apparently the rioters also set fire to a bus.
"Please have Mission command deploy all resources to Mission street. ... This is Mission command we have all resources deployed." The police were spread pretty thin, considering. It wasn't until later in the night when many groups had dispersed that they started taking areas back.
"Is there anyone with an iPhone that can take some video and send it to me?"
"They're throwing [maybe spray] pain cans into the fire and they're exploding."
"They've shut off Mission between 23rd and 24th, they've taken control."
"There's a building under construction and they're trying to start it on fire."

I think we all know this is happening, but we can't stop ourselves. We love the theatre of it. The sport.

I defended against a #zergrush on Google Search.

Haha, this is probably the best easter egg ever

Lol...these companies simply don't get it, do they? I can guarantee that I'd drop my hulu account in a heartbeat if they required a cable subscription. I'd have no qualms about it.
