This THURSDAY @ 6:30 PM @ Threeofive BrewsHear thee, Hear thee! A blast from the past culminates this THURSDAY, JUNE 1st, 2017 at 6:30 PM Live from 305Brews located in the heart of Miami's Arts District, Wynwood!
The sounds of Damian J and Jorge Gomez will bring together the music of Carlos Gardel & Louis Armstrong together on one special evening! There is no charge for this performance so take part in recreating history.
In 1959, Louis Armstrong traveled to Buenos Aires, Argentina where he became infatuated with the tango and thus an inspiration occurred. Armstrong took the melohttps://www.instagram.com/p/BUxB1S-hHHd/dy from "Adios Muchachos" and began to fill it with improvisation and newfound lyricism. The result is the cornerstone for my project's latest collaboration.

"Tango Jazz"

The project continues to jettison 2017 with maximum force! Although fewer in numbers than ever compared to other musical organizations in Miami our voice is nonetheless as important. No we will not go quietly in the night nor will we relinquish our underground movement dedicated to the true history of jazz. I am honored to carry the torch set before us by our forefathers. What Miles, Bird, Dizzy, John Coltrane and many others began we must conclude. My project strives to survive this musical legacy set forth and is dedicated to its preservation, development and education through what I created, an open source collaboration of musicians in South Florida. I represent those voices and fight for their survival. That jazz be the definitive voice is an understatement. Jazz will supercede all limits of human culture and present a future collision of sounds never before conceived. That man must breathe is as essential a component to our survival as that of improvisation and as in all collaborative art we seek each other. America is the envy of the world for all the wrong reasons. Art is at the forefront of Europe's facade. Jazz is this country's only art form and it lurks in the dark receses of today's modern counterculture struggling to survive a withering musical economy while all the mediocrity rises to the top of the market. Jazz lovers I implore you. This is a definite call to action. We are musicians, we are teachers, we are students studying our rich history of collaboration, groove and melody. This pen is mightier than the sword. Can we not overcome? How much angst must we muster in order to be given a chance. All over the world each day more people collectively involve themselves in this music to some degree while the battle to remain at all present in our US music scene leaves me and my comerades past exhaustion and with little hope. Many abandon hope and aspirations of keeping jazz alive. Others embark on journeys involving pop music and rap careers. Throughout all musical history since its inception in New Orleans, Louisiana 1914, Jazz has existed in the limelight, hidden, in the background, in the underground, lost from earshot in order to make earshot for all who are willing to listen. The greatest mistake and stereotype is to think that this music is for the intelligencia unable to be appreciated by all when it is the music of the poor and the voice of the uneducated, the illiterate, the many lost souls who wish to express their immense frustration with life and their existence when all they have is a horn, sticks or hands to pound out note for note the tradition that is call and response, improvisation and form surrounding melody. All elements of jazz come from within. Salvation lies within. We must look at the periods, the evolution, only then can we come as close to the truth of how and why this music came to be that we understand it, feel it and thus possess it. Jazz is future. We are free. This long winded rant is the product of one man's desperation living in a beautiful city that continually inspires me to create while at the same time continually keeps me from creating. This parodoxical nightmare continues as the voice of jazz grows faint. Memories begin to fade and night becomes a long lost lover that once cradled our past victories. Whether it be American folk music, rap, country music, even gospel has not endured what the jazz musician has and it is because we survived that we are determined to thrive, now more than ever. But at some point something's gotta give. Something has to change. Once cast out of all religious circles and being depicted as being satanic, jazz music became popularized and accepted by society only after the "Jazz at the Vespers" series thanks to George Lewis, only then did we see change. We are about due a second coming for this music people. A long and enriching tale to be told, I once again invite all who read this rant, better yet I challenge you to seek out this timeless art form. Ask why not, why can't we find real jazz in Miami? True jazz? The origins of Dixieland, swing, bebop, the birth of the cool, the art of the quartet, the history of Latin jazz, all of jazz history presented by one man who will guide us on a path to cultural enrichment. Then ask what happened to the Damian J Project and wonder whether my voice has been extinguished forever....
