Giovanni Corazza, founder of the Marconi Institute for Creativity and professor at the University of Bologna, speaks about convergent and divergent thinking and innovation. The task of innovation is necessary to us all, says Corazza who, in this presentation at Tedx Roma, breaks down our internal resistance to thinking outside the box with insight, clear explanation and a real world example.

Leaders are urged to seek solitude to gain moral fortitude, emotional health, clarity of thinking and creativity.

This is what Raymond Kethledge, a U.S. Court of Appeals judge, and Michael Erwin, a leadership development consultant and assistant professor at West Point tell us in their book, Lead Yourself First.

The book retells the stories of influential religious, political, military and popular leaders who looked for alone-time in the face of difficult decisions.

Two examples are:

President Eisenhower had to make a decision whether to send paratroopers behind Nazi lines in preparation for the D-Day landings in Normandy, France in June 1944. The expected death toll for the advance troops was 50 to 70 percent. Without the sacrifice, the D-Day landing, and the outcome of the war, would almost certainly be doomed, however. To make this life-and-death decision, President Eisenhower retired to solitude in his tent.

For President Abraham Lincoln, solitude was a place to vent his anger and frustration at a lost opportunity to cut the American Civil War in half. The Union Army, led by General George Meade, had many opportunities to crush the confederate army following the battle of Gettysburg in July 1863. Due to the procrastination of General Meade, however, the opportunity was lost and the war would go on for another two years.

The place of solitude for President Lincoln was his room where he "wept, and poured out his distress and anger in a letter to Meade", which was never sent.

Business decisions may not be of such dramatic consequences. They are, however, important to us and the lives of our families and employees. Stopping before crucial decisions, and retiring from the company of others, may be the necessary action you are not taking in your decision-making process.

"To be a leader, you need one thing, and one thing only, followers" says Simon Sinek, British/American author, motivational speaker and marketing consultant. According to Sinek, you have two options if you want people to follow you. You can get them to follow you by manipulating them – or you can be so inspirational that people will voluntarily follow. Which kind of leader are you?
