Revelations by U.S. National Security Agency whistleblower Edward Snowden in 2013 of widespread eavesdropping by the N.S.A. proved to confirm the suspicions many had concerning unprecedented large scale spying by the U.S. government. An unexpected disclosure by Snowden, was the policy of the N.S.A. to codebreak and intercept  messages on the personal phones of foreign leaders allied to the U.S. These included France's President Francois Hollande, Mexican President Enrique Nieto, Brazilian President Dilma Rouseff and German Chancellor Angela Merkel. The U.S. never admitted to past spying, but, if he can be taken at his word, President Obama stated that there would be no future spying on leaders of U.S. allies.
