On July 22nd I finally switched away from using Google as my search engine. Their fundraiser for Senator Inhofe and the national Republican Senatorial Committee was the final straw. I am currently trying out DuckDuckGo. So far it is working reasonably. Now I must try to remember to make DuckDuck a verb.

OK, this is meant to be comedy, but is there a basis in it?:

I tried a couple of the searches and didn't get similar results. Google long ago started tailoring searches; are these tailored results? Can anyone replicate them?

Despite what this article says:
http://www.nytimes.com/2013/07/18/us/politics/bipartisan-backlash-grows-against-domestic-surveillance.html
I found that one of my Senators, Diane Feinstein, answered my letter about domestic surveillance basically saying it was necessary and that there were checks and balances in the system. She repeated the Zazi story in her email, even though that story has been discredited (see http://bigstory.ap.org/article/nyc-bomb-plot-details-settle-little-nsa-debate). IMO, Senator Feinstein needs to be sent into retirement.

I have occasionally written about technology that needs to be invented, but Mark Fiore has imagined something far more innovative:

400 is just another number, but like so many things, it helps to see this as another signpost on the way to hell (remember that 350 is the point we shouldn't go beyond, even though we did that back in the late 1980s):

When will we pull out of our fossil addiction binge? Unfortunately the answer to that is probably when collapse forces us to.
