“No matter what you’re writing, you just hope that you have something new to contribute to the subject. Whether it’s slavery or war or domestic troubles, someone smarter and more talented has written about it before you got to the scene. But you’ve got your own particular set of skills and experiences and talents, so you can do your own thing.”

VCU photographer Julia Rendleman was a staff photographer at the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette in 2014 when she and journalist Moriah Balingit received a tip about people living in a rundown apartment complex in Carrick, a neighborhood south of the city.

Rendleman’s photos documenting the refugee experience — both in Nepal and after relocation in the United States — is featured as part of a new exhibit curated by Art Works Projects.

Sama Bilbao y Leon is associate professor and director of nuclear energy programs at Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond, the largest public university in Virginia.

In 2007, there was no nuclear engineering program at the university level in Virginia, even though the state is home to a large nuclear infrastructure, managed by Areva, a national accelerator facility, NASA, the nuclear Navy, and Dominion, which operates four nuclear power plants. Bilbao y Leon, then a nuclear safety analysis engineer at Dominion, created the nuclear engineering program at VCU and taught the first course.

“To have their amazing lives honored by the largest LGBTQ community center in the state is a great honor. Richmond is lucky to have these three individuals and so is VCU. Simply by living their lives out and boldly every day, their witness challenges norms, breaks down stereotypes, and builds up community."
