Entries to Momentum Cape Times Knysna Forest Marathon now open - 32nd Forest Marathon to yet again include spectacular Knysna scenery

KNYSNA (17 March 2015) – Entries to the Momentum Cape Times Knysna Forest Marathon, taking place on Saturday 11 July 2015 as part of the ten-day Pick n Pay Knysna Oyster Festival, are open but hurry as less than 2000 of the 8500 available entries remain

One of South Africa’s most sought-after running events, which is usually sold out within a few weeks, the Momentum Cape Times Knysna Forest Marathon offers some of South Africa’s most spectacular natural scenery in and around the Knysna Forest.

Whether you compete in the half (21km) or the full (42km) version, the race offers several unique highlights found in no other race anywhere in the world. . Much of the run takes place deep in the forest with a breath-taking view over the Knysna lagoon into The Heads, for inspiration towards the finish.  Race tip is to start slow (there’s a 2.5km incline at the start), and finish strong (it’s a long, if albeit downhill, slog to the finish).

Although no-one taking part has ever seen the elusive Knysna elephants, little piles of dung sometimes seen on the route are a reminder that they do inhabit the forest, somewhere.  Keeping this pristine environment in mind and the potential impact of the race on it, all runners share rides into the forest provided by local taxis to the race start in a clearing in the forest where runners arriving early are also treated to hot drinks and snacks next to warming fires.

Due to the early start of the race when temperatures in the forest are low, participants are encouraged to arrive dressed warmly, and any clothing discarded at the start or along the route will be donated to designated charities.  This year race sponsor Momentum will also donate 2,000 extra blankets to keep runners cosy at the start, and to be donated to local communities after the race.  The designated race charities for 2015 are: E PAP Youth feeding scheme; Knysna Youth for Christ; Sinethemba Youth Centre and Heroes Youth Trauma counselling.

Entries can only be secured online at www.knysnamarathonclub.com. Pricing is as follows:

Half Marathon entries Cost R115 (Inclusive of Transport, Entry, Race Fees and Online Fees, as well as a disposable electronic Timing Chip)
Full Marathon entries Cost R125 (Inclusive of Transport, Entry, Race Fees and Online Fees, as well as a disposable electronic Timing Chip)
Unlicensed Runners will need to purchase a temporary ASWD running license available with the online entry at a cost of R35 + R3 online fee
A moisture-management, long sleeve event T-shirt is available as an optional extra for R150
From today 150 half and 30 Full Marathon Charity entries will be on sale until sold out. Another 150 Half and 30 Full Marathon Charity Entries will be on sale from 15 May until sold out. This will be the last chance to obtain an entry. Charity entries will include a R500 donation to designated event charities. Compulsory registration for the marathon is on Friday 10 July 2015 from 10:00am – 10:00pm at Festival Grounds, Waterfront Drive, and Knysna.

New BIG5 Format Announced

One of South Africa’s top multi-sport events, the BIG 5 SPORT CHALLENGE offers some of South Africa’s most spectacular natural scenery – from mountain biking and running in and around Knysna’s famed forests and hills, to swimming its estuary with a view of Heads.

This year the organizers at WorldSport have streamlined the well-received BIG 5 SPORT CHALLENGE, building on its success as an enviable bucket list item on the international endurance and adventure race calendar. From 2015 onwards, athletes will take part in five predetermined events and rankings will be done based on cumulative time. This year participants will compete in the following events:

80km Momentum Weekend Argus Rotary Knysna Cycle Tour – MTB Race
Knysna Dragons Lagoon Mile Swim
14km The Salomon Featherbed Trail Run presented by GU – Coelacanth Route
Totalsports XTERRA presented by REHIDRAT® SPORT – Full Version
21km Momentum Cape Times Knysna Forest Marathon Half Marathon
Once again, entrants to the BIG 5 SPORT CHALLENGE will enjoy a one-stop registration process, preferred seeding for all five events, and awards ceremonies for each stage and overall, with the leaderboard being based on cumulative time. Finishers will also receive a shirt and medal with the overall winners being honoured with prize money and trophies.

SHUCKLE TICKETS SELLING FAST

Undoubtedly one of the Festival highlights, this year’s Shuckle will be hosted by SA’s favourite funnymen, Kurt Schoonraad and Stuart Taylor on Thursday, 10 July. Come and see them in action, and watch – or even enter – the oyster eating or shucking competitions!

Last year Patrick Sibeko won first place for the third year in a row when he shucked 26 oysters in just two minutes and two seconds! Locals Eben Strydom and Wayne Rhode took top honours for shucking and eating 14 oysters in only one minute!

To enter : If you think you have what it takes to top them in either the shucking or eating competitions, email picca@cyberperk.co.za. Entry to
both competitions is free. Entry forms are also available at Knysna Tourism.

To attend: R100 per person – includes six oysters
Tickets: Online http://pnptickets.co.za/ / Knysna Tourism, 40 Main St
Date: Thursday, 10 July 2014
Time: The event starts at 6pm and ends at 10pm, with live music continuing
 until 11pm

Kurt Schoonrad:
Mad, zany, lively and manic are among the many words that are used to describe comedian Kurt Schoonraad. Hailing from Mitchell’s Plain, Kurt is Cape Town’s favourite comedian and his earthy humour makes him a real South African boykie in every way.

Stuart Taylor:
Stuart Taylor is probably best known to South Africans as the presenter of SABC 3’s hit travel show, ‘Going Nowhere Slowly’. His theatre production ‘Learner Husband’ played to critical acclaim and in 2012 Stuart toured the country with his latest solo offerings.

KNYSNA TOURISM LIVING LOCAL GREEN CHEFS FINALISTS ANNOUNCED

The Knysna Tourism Living Local Green Chefs initiative, in partnership with Wesgro, has announced six finalists who will compete for cash prizes, as well as the chance to participate in world-class chef and catering training, as part of its annual cooking competition held during the Pick n Pay Knysna Oyster Festival between 3 and 14 July 2014.

Knysna Tourism Office Manager, Glendyrr Fick explains: “The competition kicks off with participants presenting their dishes to our panel of judges for a blind tasting. The finalists are then chosen and they go on to present their creations to members of the public. In the past we’ve chosen five finalists, but this year the competition was so stiff, we had to choose six!”

The public will choose their favourite dish and local personalities will also be on hand to judge the meals. The winning dish will be announced at the end of the week. The 2014 finalists are Amerencia October, Francine Wagenaar, Michelle Strode, Nofundo Ndunana, Rodney Rolleson and Thabisile Lufundo (in alphabetical order).

If you want to be part of this exciting initiative, make sure you stop in to the Knysna Tourism Office on Main Street any time between 10am and 3:30pm during the week of the Pick n Pay Knysna Oyster Festival.

In the true spirit of the Festival, all ingredients used in the preparation of meals at the Living Local Green Chefs initiative will be sourced from local communities. The Festival is famous for its ongoing investment in the local community and has over the past seven years given back an incredible R8,7-million to local charities and initiatives.

Reigning Totalsports XTERRA Pezula champions Stuart Marais and Carla Van Huyssteen will return to Knysna on Thursday, 10 July 2014 to defend their titles at the action packed Totalsports XTERRA Pezula presented by REHIDRAT® SPORT.

“The vibe and crowd make the Totalsports XTERRA Pezula such a spectacular event,” says Carla Van Huyssteen. “It is always a great feeling to win at any of the Totalsports XTERRA races. I’ll definitely recommend this event to newcomers to the sport. Totalsports XTERRA Pezula features a great course and for the non-swimmers this is a great introduction into the sport of XTERRA”.

According to Marais, XTERRA Pezula is a unique duathlon. “I often have extremely stiff competition from the likes of Kevin Evans, who is a pro mountain biker and a true competitor. I love the setting, I love the kid’s event and I love the way the newbies hit the course with everything they have. It is very special knowing that this XTERRA is part of the Pick ‘n Pay Knysna Oyster Festival Big 5 Challenge. It creates a whole new dynamic to the race, but also the week in Knysna”.

Reigning Totalsports XTERRA SA Champion Dan Hugo Eager to toe the line in Knysna

After having to miss out on the 2013 event due to injury, reigning Totalsports XTERRA SA Champion Dan Hugo is eager to toe the line at the Pick n Pay Knysna Oyster Festival at the fast paced Totalsports XTERRA Pezula presented by REHIDRAT® SPORT on Thursday, 10 July 2014.

“Last year it was terribly disappointing for me to be eager to race mentally, but unable physically,” says Hugo. “I am proud to be able to take part as a brand ambassador for Totalsports, Puma, REHIDRAT® and Specialized – all partners of mine and XTERRA South Africa. I am really looking forward to the week in Knysna. This is my philosophy to the sport of XTERRA, it is more than just two hours of racing, it is the drive up, staying with friends and family, pre-riding routes and visiting coffee shops. The Pick ‘n Pay Knysna Oyster Festival brings out the best of all that, including a wine show’.

“What I hope for is a fun, muddy, warm-fire kind of shared sporting experience,” continues Hugo. “My training and travel partner Bradley Weiss might be primed for a first XTERRA win. He is in phenomenal shape and the run-bike-run format of Totalsports XTERRA Pezula suits him well. The Totalspsorts XTERRA Pezula is the ideal excuse to leave work early. Make a long weekend of it, car pool to Knysna and get muddy in the forest. Come and live more”.

Forming part of the much loved Pick ‘n Pay Knysna Oyster Festival the Totalsports XTERRA Pezula is the only Totalsports XTERRA SA event that does not feature a water discipline, but instead follows a run, mountain bike, run format.
