Upward Bound is a TRIO program that helps low-income, mostly first-generation students prepare for and apply to colleges. Imagine how confusing essay writing, SAT taking, college visits, and the residential experience is for first years whose parents haven't gone through that themselves, who may not be able to afford application fees or college visits.

I first stepped foot on Smith College campus (a place I didn't know existed until a UB staff member had told me about it) on a UB-sponsored college tour. At the encouragement of UB staff I had arranged an interview. By the time I left that campus, I knew where I wanted to spend the next four years of my life, and I jumped up and down the day I got my acceptance letter.

I would have gone to college without UB, but I never would have gone to Smith, and I wouldn't be who I am today. For a lot of students, UB has given them the tools and support to figure out how to get where they want to go.

I urge you to take a moment to...
Currently, more than 800,000 students – from sixth-graders to doctoral candidates, from military veterans to displaced workers – rely on TRIO Programs for support in their pursuit of a college degree....

I'm pessimistic about protests... what good does a holding a sign, lighting a candle or chanting something do? Go write a letter to a member of congress! Start a petition, and so on... but sometimes I think protests are spontaneous symptoms of a cultural movement/moment, which are not always easy to put into words (or neat little talking points). I'm not necessarily moved by the protesters themselves, but rather the depth of the discontent. There's something there. And maybe the protests won't reach critical mass, but the discontent is still there, and it makes me happy that people in my generation are finally giving voice to something, even if I don't agree with all of it.

And I don't know that I'm being cynical about the protests, I was actually saying that even though I'm typically negative about protesting in general I have generally been intrigued by the OWS movement because I do think there's something there. I'm not sure anything will be accomplished by camping out, but I hope the underlying discontent can be operationalized into actual change.

I guess the typical six-month Maine winter is looking to expand to seven months... fffffffft. gets out shovel
Following a slushy swipe Thursday, low pressure will track up the Northeast Seaboard Saturday, with heavy wet snow, high winds, and widespread power outages.

Ha, not even an inch here on the coast and it's already turned to rain. YAY OCEAN! But I guess Bangor got six inches, and in parts of southern Maine like Bridgton and Gray got over a foot.
