Introduction
I'm a paramedic who believes that everybody should know some basic first aid and that every person is in charge of his or her own medical care.

I've been responding to medical emergencies (and non-emergencies) for more than two decades. I cover first aid, emergency response and emergency preparedness for About.com and I'm the author of Life's Little Emergencies: A Handbook for Active Independent Seniors and Caregivers.

As a teacher, consultant, writer and researcher, I like to share my opinion and my expertise. Feel free to contact me; I welcome questions from the media, the public and potential clients.

Do you want to know how to tell if your toes got too cold?
You might know frostbite happens in fingers and toes. You might know it comes from being in really cold weather. You may even know it can come from improperly icing an injury. But, do you know how to recognize frostbite?
