Moore's Law has never been better illustrated than in this image. A factor of 1000 in less than ten years.

Happy new year with my chart of all active and future Solar System missions for of January 1st 2014.
For the first time in 37 years with robots on the Moon. Things to look forward to:The arrival of Mangalyaan (or MOM) and MAVEN at Mars, the arrival of Curiosity at Mt. Sharp, and the launch of Hayabusa 2. And the star this year: Rosetta/Philae orbiting comet Churyumov-Gerasimenko and landing on it.
See also http://www.planetary.org/blogs/emily-lakdawalla/2013/20131231-whats-up-in-planetary-2014.html, which also features my chart.

1 Day until the launch of #MAVEN, NASA's next Mars explorer: The Mars Atmosphere and Volatile Evolution, or MAVEN, spacecraft will be the first to study the Red Planet's upper atmosphere. Scientists expect data gathered during the MAVEN mission to help explain how Mars' climate has changed over time due to the loss of atmospheric gases.

Pictured here is a road sign adjacent to NASA's Kennedy Space Center in Florida that counts down the days until launch. MAVEN is set to launch aboard a United Launch Alliance Atlas V rocket during a 20-day launch period beginning November 18. The one-year mission begins in Sept. 2014, when the spacecraft reaches Mars orbit.

A $758,489 camera?

That's how much the Apollo 15 camera just went for:

http://www.ndtv.com/article/world/camera-used-on-moon-landing-sold-for-758-489-499495

To win the Google Lunar XPRIZE, you need unprecedented HD---which you can't just pick up off the shelf and buy for space travel! So, many of the teams are having to build their own new camera systems.

Great #photos

The Desert

When I was in Abu Dhabi a few months back, one thing I was hoping to photograph were beautiful, flowing sand-dunes. What I didn't expect were little puffs of green to add to the scene! I thought they added depth and a nice focal-point to the image (and it was fun hiking on the sand-dunes at sunrise to get this shot). :)
