Hillsdale Provost and Professor of English Dr. David M. Whalen's August 5 lecture—"Liberal Learning, the Ancients, and Ourselves"—is now available to view on the Kirby Center website.

"In a very real sense, a liberal education will—and is meant to—ruin you for the world.... This liberal arts quasi-exile is another way of saying one is freed from the tyranny of the merely immediate. It is a truth reminiscent of the paradox about losing your life to save it. But in the entirely natural order, a certain kind of self-exile is necessary in order to govern oneself, much less a polity. The great paradox written into the liberal arts tradition, ancient and modern, is that you have to leave the world to know it; you have to distance yourself from things in order to see them clearly."
