Another old metric that has little currency with social media engagement models.
A make-good is when a marketing medium adjusts the amount it charges an advertiser for use. It's part of the metrics toolkit applied to traditional media, and it illustrates some of the key differences between commercial speech and the premises of social media conversation.

Will privacy be an issue for marketers in 2015? It already is...
In lieu of penning a disposable prognostication about next year (I wonder if there’s an Island of Lost Forecasts where all the top ten lists go?), I’ve prepared one-stop primers on the three areas I’ve focused on this year — privacy, innovation, and reputation — to give marketers a primer [...]

History preserves the biases of the past, not just the events.
Today, good works were recognized.Dominic of Osma practiced what he preached while he was a theology student in Palencia, Spain in the late 12th century, giving away all of his worldly possessions so he could focus on helping victims of a recent famine. When the religious sect of Cathars (or Albigensians) in the South of France were condemned by the Church a few years later for their belief in two gods and lots of Eastern mysticism, Dominic thoug...

It's about a lot more than artistic expression...
Behind the blather about free speech lurks the more important revelations of the Sony hack: The end of anonymity, and the tyranny of the Dark Cloud.First off, enough with the crocodile tears about the First Amendment, which precludes the American government from establishing an official religion, and protects citizens’ right to complain about anything else it might try to do. Speech of the commercial variety has never been “free” in Hollywood, an...

A reduced price masks lots of greater costs?
More than 18 insurance companies offer policyholders the choice of putting a device in their cars that wirelessly transmits real-time data, which can lead to lower rates for good drivers. It seems like a logical extension of the calculations insurance companies have always made on policies, but too few participants in these programs are aware of the trade-offs they're making, according to a story by Jodi Mohrmann at News4Jax.com:“But before you g...

Frank Zappa was a social media phenomenon before there were such things as social media.
Today, an inventive mother was born. When Frank Zappa was born on this day in 1940, America was economically and culturally still in the grip of the Great Depression. Hemlines were long and frayed. Few folks owned TVs, and more farm homes owned radios than telephones or automobiles, on which they listened to big band music or religious programming, mostly.Somehow, Zappa discovered R&B music as a teenager (which wasn’t often played on mainstream ra...

In the Analog Era, actions spoke louder than words.
Today, a destiny became manifest. The Louisiana Purchase was formally completed today in 1803, doubling the size of the United States with almost 830,000 square miles that cost it all of about 18 bucks per acre (the land would eventually constitute 14 new states). Why the sweetheart deal? Napoleon had recently failed to reimpose slavery on the Haitians, which meant he’d lost his lucrative sugar income. He also worried about having to defend New Or...

Communications satellites disrupted history.
Today, a nice SCORE blew up how we communicate.Prior to the launch of Sputnik 1 in October, 1957, artificial satellites had been the stuff of science fiction. Edward Everett Hale first floated the idea in a short story called The Brick Moon, published in 1869. Jules Verne added one to his story The Begum's Fortune a decade later. Scientists pondered rockets and fuel and trajectories, but it was Arthur C. Clarke who wrote a seminal article for Wir...
