It was a Christmas to remember at our Southport care home, Woodland’s Manor, when resident Kenny received the best gift he could have asked for: a reunion with his old mate Jamie Carragher.

Hailing from Bootle, Kenny worked as a caretaker at Melwood and Anfield for many years. He knew Jamie from back when the Liverpool legend used to be a young trainee. 72 year-old Kenny now has dementia and struggles with his memory. But when Jamie walked into the family room at Woodlands on the weekend after Christmas, Kenny had no trouble remembering him.

While there is no known cure for dementia, there are many forms of therapy that can help reduce or manage the symptoms. At Cedars Care Group homes, we are always looking for new ways to improve the life quality of our residents with dementia. This month, we hosted a trial session with an interactive system called the Tovertafel –or ‘Magic Table.’

Staff from our Southport care homes, Cedar Grange and Woodlands Manor, came together to take part in a very special voyage into the human mind affected by dementia. The training was provided by Training 2 Care through the Xperience Training mobile dementia simulator, which came to Woodlands Manor for us. Staff who took part felt it was the perfect opportunity to experience the symptoms that some of the residents they are caring for are living with on a day to day basis. The results were very affective, with participants saying they felt ‘challenged and vulnerable’ and even scared during the simulation.

Woodland’s Manor Care Home resident Cyril attended afternoon tea at Buckingham Palace this month, where he met Princess Anne. Britain’s oldest Kings Regiment veteran, and the only officer from his own regiment alive today, Cyril will be turning 101 in August. Late last year, he received the National Order of the Region of Honour –the highest French order of Merit, for taking part in the historic Normandy D-Day landings in 1944.

There are no shortage of research articles that highlight the benefits of animal assisted therapy for people with dementia and Alzheimer’s. Studies have shown a marked decrease in feelings of sadness and anxiety, when elderly people in care took part in activities involving pets.

At Cedars Care Group, we welcome every opportunity to bring animals into our homes. We find that they are a source of great comfort for our residents who love to pet and interact with them.

Love was in the air at Cedars Care Group homes this month, as some of our residents celebrated Valentines Day with their spouses, and our staff were reminded again, that some loves really are made to last forever.

At Woodlands Manor Care Home, staff pulled out all the stops to organise a romantic day. The 50’s room was decked out with valentines decorations, with three tables-for-two set for our wonderful Tom, Eric and Andy.
