There is a fine line between taking a cuisine in a new direction and stripping it of its soul. This is a belief that we keep in mind when contemplating the cuisine at Empellon Cocina.

Amazing experience, Mexican kitchen with it's own character. Great interior creating a very relaxed but stylish atmosphere. Super friendly staff who even took their time to give us some recommendations. Our dinner here has definitely been a highlight of our NYC trip.

I had issues with the service. But the food was so good it didn't matter. Like no other Mexican you've ever had, and that's a good thing... That was in 11/13. I've been back several times and was pretty much feeling the same until tonite... Which will be my last time here. The menu has changed and I presume so has the chef. No go, no more.

Simple yet cozy atmosphere. Had the most amazing soft tacos and guacamole. The drinks were good and not too strong. Definitely will be back.

Went to Empellon Cocina with my girlfriend last night for restaurant week. It was a great experience and by the end of the meal we agreed to go back for our anniversary. They start you off with a shot of tequila and a housemade chaser, a nice touch. The guacamole and masa chips were outstanding, our appetizers the vermicelli noodle/bean dish and the crab and mango salad were great, and the taco dishes were solid too. I'm pretty picky about tacos because I was born in Southern California, and when I go back, I'll probably go for a different entree, but I really couldn't complain. My mezcal margarita was sublime. Dessert was also outstanding. A real culinary experience!

I love this place. Alex Stupak was one of the world’s most renowned and inventive pastry chefs, thanks to his work in Chicago at Alinea, this country’s holiest temple of avant-garde cuisine, and on the Lower East Side at WD-50, another modernist sanctuary. Now he uses his imagination to inspire his own mexican cuisine. Be prepared for seasonal menus that are constantly inventing new traditions. I would love to tell you my favorites but most likely by the time you visit it will have made way for some other delicious fare.

This spot is one of the best Mexican offerings in the city alongside Salvation Taco. Inventive drinks like a rose and hibiscus infused margaritas to bacon guacamole with grainy flatbread instead of your typical tortilla chips. Creative tacos shine through like pastrami and dill or grilled brussels sprouts and almonds providing some originality with a serious dose of flavor. Fantastic spot for date night as well. Bottom line: Top notch creative dishes, expertly crafted cocktails and a delightful ambience makes this one of the best spots to eat Mexican in the city.

Mixed bag - the guacamole and tortilla is delicious. A mass of delicious tequila. But we had very average food for starters, mains and dessert. The tortilla soup was bland, the porb belly was watery and lack any mexican 'zing', the chicken breast was tender and the best savory dish, but again lacked flavour. The flan was the oddest flavour and we couldn't eat it. Go here for a drink and a nibble, but its high end prices without the delivery.
