Vaccine Advocates: Please Don't Discriminate Against My Autistic Son. My piece at io9.com: http://io9.com/vaccine-advocates-please-dont-discriminate-against-my-1684756521
Public opinion has turned, sharply and loudly, in favor of supporting vaccines. Yay! It took an outbreak of measles at Disneyland for it to happen. Boo! (Your grandmother might have survived her measles, but for others it can be fatal.)

Kelli Stapleton pled guilty in her autistic daughter Issy's carbon monoxide poisoning. I want to be very clear: there is no justifying murder, or attempted murder. Yet reporting consistently describes Kelli's act as one of "desperation" or, more distressingly, "love." We must distinguish between understanding that parenting can be extremely challenging, and justifying the mindset of someone who tries to take an innocent life. And please do not try to justify murder with lack of services or mental illness, most people who lack services or who are mentally ill do not try to kill their children. Parent +Jennifer Byde Myers explains the matter, with empathy.

Vaccines are consistently cited by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) as the most important public health intervention of the 20th Century, second only to clean water.  Vaccinating according to the recommended childhood vaccine schedule will save nearly 732,000 lives and prevent 21 million hospitalizations in the children who have been vaccinated over the past two decades, yet that progress is now at risk. Vaccines protect peo...

Our cat was attacked by a bobcat and not expected to fully recover, and possibly not even walk. Yet thanks to the expert and compassionate care from the good folks at North Peninsula, she not only recovered from her wounds but recovered full range of motion in her neck and legs, and you'd never know she'd been injured. We are very grateful for the detail-oriented, caring staff and the care they gave our sweet girl.
