After the savage No’he Esfand mob scene in front of Mossadegh’s residence, CIA Director Allen Dulles sent an urgent report to Pres. Eisenhower on the complex political conditions in Iran. About 40% of this top secret document was declassified in 1989, but only recently was it revealed in near-entirety.

Ayatollah Kashani’s aims of toppling Premier Mossadegh were keenly observed by the CIA, who hoped to capitalize on the crafty old cleric’s opposition. In a series of reports, the CIA weighed the chances of such an outcome and repeatedly concluded that despite his influence, Kashani was unlikely to successfully overcome the strength of Mossadegh.
