Does the age of a tire matter? Yes, it does.

Tires are made out of rubber and metal belts. What happens is as the tire gets old the rubber starts to dry out and will lose its flexibility. When the rubber dry rots you will see cracks in the tire. Also the tire is more prone to coming apart. A perfect example is a rubber band when it gets old. As the rubber band gets older it loses its flexibility and will break.

What can happen?

As the tires get older they lose their flexibility. What can happen is as you drive down the rub and hit a bump or air pressure increases due to heat you will have a greater strain on the sidewall of the tire. The sidewall will be unable to take the strain and will let go causing a blowout.

How can you prevent this?

You really can’t, it will happen. You can prolong the tire life by keeping the tires out of the sun and the heat. It’s actually a very good idea if you have a trailer or RV that sits to invest in tire covers to help protect them.
Now some tire cleaners and dressers claim to help prevent dry rotting but its unproven.

How do you know if the tires need to be replace due to age?

There are two ways to know. The first is to look for signs of dry rot. Dry rot will appear to be cracks in the rubber.
The second way is to check the production date on the tire. All tires are supposed to have this date according to federal law.

The last 4 digits are the manufacture date. First two numbers are the week and last two is the year.
A good rule of thumb is if your tires are over 5 years old they should be replace.

What does it mean when your Check Engine Light is on.

Your Check Engine Light comes on when ever the PCM in the car detects an emissions related problem. It could be something as simple as a loose gas cap or could be some much worse such as an engine miss-fire. The only way to know for sure is to have the light properly Diagnose.
