I have found that if I tell people (outside of a musical context), "I'm a classical singer," they are simply baffled, as if I had used an eccentric and utterly opaque phrase. The phrase conveys nothing to them: they cannot, apparently, conceive of an analogue of such common phrases as "classical pianist," "classical violinist," etc. The nearest that I get to comprehension is the reply, "You mean, like, opera?" You may as well just say "I'm an opera singer" in the first place, as it seems to be the only form of classical singing of which people who are not well acquainted with classical music have any idea.
