Aurora vs. Moonlit Clouds in Fox, Alaska, USA
Dirk: "This has been likely the strongest and most impressive aurora displays of the last few nights (with the most intense period occurring around 1:00 AM) and being much brighter than the surrounding moonlit clouds—if not outshining the Moon itself being 3/4 illuminated. We were glad to have ventured out to observe this fantastic display despite a not so promising weather forecast predicting dense cloud cover as well as 4 inches of snow, and most geomagnetic/auroral predictions expecting quiet conditions for last night. You just never know!"

"At mid-northern latitudes, moonset on Sunday evening (Aug. 11) occurs at about 10:15 p.m. local time and around 10:50 p.m. the following night. Since dawn doesn't break until around 4:30 a.m. local time that means there will be between five-and a-half to six hours of dark, moonless skies for the two best viewing nights for the Perseids."
