One of my favorite writers, Sady Doyle, has named a piece I wrote for Feministe as one of her top five long reads of 2011. I'm humbled and honored (especially as it's mentioned alongside one of my own favorite long reads of the year, "I'm Gonna Need You to Fight Me on This" by Mac McClelland in GOOD), and am sharing it here because it was a much-needed reminder to me that telling our stories has power.

I love the short hair. I think you look great with long hair too. Wait, I say you about a year after this picture was taken. You hair grows fast!

What exactly do we mean when we call something "cute"? A look at the history and current usage of the gosh-darned adorable word.

Pleased that Salon picked up my piece defending a good 30% of my reading material: ladyblogs, apparently the world's biggest slumber party.

New interview with mortician Daniella Marcantoni on postmortem makeup and helping those who can't help themselves: "When you see abuse or neglect, you take even more personal responsibility to really just take care of that person. Because it’s like, Well, no one else cared for them for the past year. They’re going to be in my care for four hours—I might as well do the best that I can with the limits I have and the amount of time that I’ve been given with them."

Men's beauty products are booming. Is this a subversion of gender roles or just an expanded version of the beauty myth? I wrestle with this in my guest post at Feministe.
