April 24 th is World Meningitis Awareness Day

Meningitis is an acute bacterial (or viral) infection which can cause hearing loss and is fatal in 5-40% of children and 20-50% of adults even with treatment.

The most common symptoms include:
-headache
-fever/vomit
-stiff neck
-avoidance of bright lights
-difficulty in swallowing
-confusion/delirium
-rash
-seizure

Onset may be quick and immediate medical attention is vital. As a Health Care Worker, I have had patients admitted before noon and dead by the next morning. A lumbar puncture is performed to identify the disease determine treatment.

Some forms of meningitis may be prevented by immunization. These immunizations are recommended and often required for college students and young adults.
