I know the "why" or the "How we got here" with Health Insurance, but I think it is a little silly. If I wanted to buy any other type of service, including car insurance, I can purchase it pretty much whenever I want. If I want a watermelon in January, I can find it. If I want car insurance but haven't lost my job (or have), I can get it whenever I want. But if I want to buy health insurance, I can only do so at Open enrollment, or during a qualifying event...like when I lose coverage or have a baby. But if I lose coverage, I can't just walk down the street to my local Blue Cross or United Health Care Agent, oh no, I have to go to HealthCare.gov (all the individual insurance sites take me there) and I have to input a bunch of my information before I can even see what plans are available. I also can't choose whichever plan I want, I have to wait for someone to call me.
Can you imagine doing car insurance this way? Can you imagine grocery shopping this way? "I'm sorry sir, you're outside the open enrollment period for getting to shop in our grocery store. You'll have to wait till the end of the month after you lost shopping at the other grocery store. When open enrollment or the end of the month comes, then we'll call you."#thanksobama #yaygovernment #needlessregulation #freemarket
