This article leads to a lot of thoughts in me. (1) This school, with its "Winterim" week, sounds pretty damned awesome, and I'll bet it would be a great place to teach. (2) Portland seems fairly determined to live up to its reputation. (3) There's something very sacred in learning the entire chain of how your food is made, and participating in it. As a meat-eater, I would love to learn how to schecht, butcher, and transform meat along its whole chain, not just starting with something prepackaged from Cthulhu knows what kind of meat-packers. (4) This article is making me seriously hungry.

A system fined tuned for survival, armed against any opposition, in times of peace, without an external threat, without purpose, turns inward and destroys itself.

Perhaps someone more knowledgeable than myself can give me some input on the following subject. I am interested in Transhumanism and have begun paying attention to attempts to simulate the human brain on computer, specifically http://www.humanbrainproject.eu/ which (I believe is based on the similar Blue Brain Project).
The website itself indicates the project will focus on gaining a better understanding of neurological disorders and improved computing technologies. It seems to avoid questions of A.I. and Consciousness (which is what I'm interested in). I assume this is because it's easier to gain support and funding for the former while the later is more controversial.
I'm hoping someone with better understanding of computer technology, neurology, or philosophy of mind could weigh in on this.

Apparently if they successfully simulate a brain they will be running it in a virtual environment as if it were a living brain.
If so would it be possible for this brain experience consciousness? How would researchers detect consciousness, is it even possible?
If the virtual brain behaves in a way indistinguishable from a living, conscious brain does this present evidence against dualism, or does it indicate something different, or raise more questions than it answers? Would it somehow "lessen" the uniqueness or value of human consciousness if it can be simulated, or would we simply be forced to broaden our definition of consciousness and sentience?
Would it be possible to simulate the brains of specific individuals? Are an individual's memories physically distinct than the general neural make-up for the brain, or are they inextricable? Could a brain be simulated with the neurology of someone with an autism spectrum disorder (or other neurological disorder) but uploaded with the memories or personality of someone who's more neurotypical (or vice versa)?
Anyone hazard a prediction if any questions along these lines will be investigated in our lifetime or put aside for more practical research?
Even more hazardous prediction: is this project a step to creating uploaded post-human entities?

As you can likely tell my understanding of the subject is limited, though the website does give some clarification, I'm looking for outside opinions. Thank you :)

I think we are sorta arguing/discussing about the same thing here. Running parallel threads increases performance. That's what I'm saying.
The advantage is that it's faster, more efficient in energy and space to run multiple threads simultaneously on more cores than one thread at any given moment on a single core.
Also more closely replicates how the brain operates, processing multiple processes at the same time.
