For anyone confused about why we have the Electoral College:
Without the Electoral College voting system, states with small populations would never have a voice. If our President was elected based on the total number votes, our election results would always be driven by the top five states: California, Texas, New York, Florida and Illinois, which have over 1/3 of our nation's population. If you lived in any other state, your vote wouldn't matter at all. The Electoral College makes certain that any candidate must persuade voters in EACH STATE. The Electoral College preserves each state's sovereignty, which is essential in a representative republic (e.g. the United States of America). Direct democracy is nothing more than mob rule.
