We had a great experience...being our first whitewater trip. The guides paired us up with another family and that really made it fun. Others have advised us to go on dam release day and i have to say that really made the trip more exciting. we went to the gorge the next day and the water level was low so it would have been difficult to raft the water. Our guides were terrific, Kevin, especially. We had a large group and they did an outstanding job of making sure that we all stayed together, even with other large groups on the river. We bought the premade lunches and they were very basic, but ithe saved me the hassle of buying my own stuff to put it together. This outfit is very well organized and most of the people really like what they do. I have to agree the customer service people are really on the rude side. I found them to have very little patience on answering questions and when it took me some time to dig out my credit card, the woman got impatient with me.

This was our second visit and both have been more negative than positive. The first visit due to too much horsing around, my husband that couldn't swim was knocked into the water into the rapids and his head hit a rock. I dove in after him and dove right onto the rocks, screwing up my knees pretty bad. Other people on our trip that day got whacked in the face with an oar and someone got clocked in the head with a bucket of water. Since we did have some fun on the trip we decided to go again, even though was husband was pretty afraid. I expressed my concern for there to be more emphasis on safety to numerous leaders on the rafting trip yesterday. We went onto a raft that had a bunch of 19 year olds and one of them was the "captain of the boat"/ One of them was standing up in the boat and we ran into a rock and 3 of us, me included) shot straight out into the water. This time I landed on my sacrum on a big rock that was there. One of the rafts got stuck on a rock (pyramid rock) and the whole boat capsized in fast rapids. Another boat had a child in it that go knocked out and ended up going through the rapids by himself. I realize there are risks involved with this kind of adventure activity. The safety orientation is way too short and there is virtually no instruction on how to use the paddles, buckets, or how to navigate rougher rapids, big rocks etc.

the whitewater rafting trips are fun, but the camp needs some work. the food is pretty terrible and the same morning, midday and evening: would you like hot dogs / chicken three times a day?

Over the years, I've gone on 3 trips with Whitewater Challengers and I think they do a great job. I have extensive whitewater and canoeing experience and can say that they bridge the wide chasm between a) making it safe and fun for beginners on their day trips from NYC or Philly and b) having a realistic river adventure reasonably well. Equipment is good. Logistics are well thought out and efficient. Natural scenery along the Lehigh is worthwhile (much better than the Delaware and a lot closer than the Gauly or New) and the guides/staff know what they are doing. People have fun and get a little exercise and fresh air. This is a tough challenge for this business -- they work all year for 12~18 weekends -- and imo, they do a very good job making the outings fun, safe and worthwhile for their diverse customer base.
