06/02/2016 WEB MEMO
A volunteer writes: When I first saw this guy he was doing some serious napping on his bed. The tip of his tongue had snuck out of his mouth and when I spoke to him he wagged his tail and rolled over to show me his belly. At that point I noticed his name and I started to wonder if this was still real life!! Simultaneously dignified and mushy, Sir Pudding is a DELIGHT. Sure his coat needs a little TLC and his back legs a little more muscle tone, but he has a perpetual puppy face and a smile that makes the sun look bleak in comparison– he is the cutest! He is super wiggly and affectionate. He’ll smear himself onto my lap, playfully and gently mouth my hands, and smother my face with kisses. To boot, he is easy to handle, has been wiggly when checking out dogs we’ve seen in adjacent pens, and seems housebroken. This dreamboat could be part of your reality everyday….he’d love to meet you at Brooklyn ACC!

06/01/2016 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – AVERAGE
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Sir Pudding came into the shelter as a stray, so his past behaviors in a home are unknown. Upon intake it was reported Sir Pudding was friendly, and allowed all handling. During SAFER Sir Pudding came into the assessment room, loose and wiggly he was friendly and social towards the assessor he allowed all handling items to be conducted without issue. Sir Pudding was relaxed during the tag interaction, and during the resource portion of the assessment Sir Pudding was easy to handle when engaged with the item. Sir Pudding appears to be sociable, and did not display any behavior concerns, so the department feels he can be suitable for an “Average” adopter. Look: 1. Dog’s eyes are averted, with tail wagging and ears back. He allows head to be held loosely in Assessor’s cupped hands. Sensitivity: 1. Dog leans into the Assessor, eyes soft with soft and loose body, open mouth. Tag: 1. Dog assumes play position and joins the game. Or dog indicates play with huffing, soft ‘popping’ of the body, etc. Dog jumps on Assessor once play begins. Squeeze 1: 1. Dog does not respond at all for three seconds. His eyes are averted and his ears are relaxed. Squeeze 1: 2. Dog gently pulls back paw. Toy 1: 1. Dog settles down close to chew, will relinquish toy to you. Dog-Dog:Sir Pudding was surrendered as a stray so his past behavior around dogs is unknown. When off leash with dogs at the Care Center, Sir Pudding is sexually motivated but does not mount the female greeter dog. He displays bouncy body language throughout the interaction.

Around strangers Jazzy is friendly, outgoing and plays gently with adults. While with her previous owner Jazzy did not spend anytime with children. Jazzy lived with another dog in her previous home and she was relaxed and playful around that other dog prior to the incident the caused her ower to surrender her. Jazzy would play exuberantly with the other dog. While with her previous owner Jazzy did not spend anytime with cats so it is unknwon how she will react toward them. Jazzy has never bitten a person but has bitten another dog but no skin was broken.

Behavior:

Jazzy had no behavior issues while with her previous owner and is not bothered by loud sounds. Jazzy’s previous owner did not attempt to brush Jazzy or trim her nails so it is unknown how she would react to that event. Jazzy is friendly when someone attempts to touch her food or her bowl while she is eating, takes a treat away from her, or takes a toy/object away from her. Jazzy is also friendly when someone pushes/pulls her off of the furniture or restrains her. If an unfamiliar person approaches Jazzy’s family or home she is friendly toward them.

Intake Behavior:

Jazzy was friendly during her intake and allowed staff to collar and scan her for a microchip. Jazzy enjoys being pet on the head and back and would follow staff around the office.

BEHAVIOR

4/14/16 SAFER: Experience; behavior determination: experienced owner; no male dogs

Jazzy was returned to us due to an altercation she had with the adopter’s other dog in the home. According to the adopter Jazzy was relaxed and playful around the other dog in the home before the incident that caused the adopter to return Jazzy. The owner reported that one time while eating in the living room when both dogs got into an altercation. This resulted in Jazzy biting the other dog’s ear but did not break skin, and the adopter was not able to get her off for about 5 minutes. Unfortunately, the owner wasn’t initially present and does not know how this fight started. The adopter mentioned that Jazzy is friendly, outgoing, and plays gently with strangers and adults. Besides this incident the adopter did state that Jazzy has had no behavioral problems while with them.

When entering the behavior room Jazzy had soft and loose body language. She allowed the assessor to conduct all tactile assessment items while maintaining soft body language. During the tag interaction Jazzy joined in play with the assessor, and calmed quickly when the item ended. She proved easy to handle when chewing on the toy item as the assessor attempted to take it with the assess-a-hand. Due to observations made in playgroup, the altercation in the adopter’s home we recommend that Jazzy is placed with an experienced adopter with no other male dogs.

Look: 1. Dog’s eyes are averted. Her ears are back, her tail is down, and she has a relaxed body posture. Dog allows head to be held loosely in Assessor’s cupped hands.

Sensitivity: 1. Dog stands still and accepts the touch, her eyes are averted, and her tail is in neutral position with relaxed body posture. Dog’s mouth is closed for a portion of the assessment item.

Tag: 1. Dog assumes play position and joins the game. She indicates play with huffing, soft ‘popping’ of the body, etc.

Squeeze 1: 1. Dog does not respond at all for three seconds. Her eyes are averted and her ears are back.

Squeeze 2: 1. Dog does not respond at all for three seconds. Her eyes are averted and her ears are back.

Toy: 1. Dog settles close, keeps a firm grip and is loose and wiggly. She does not place her body between you and the toy.

She really has a grace to her and is soft-tempered with everyone she meets. When she plays with other dogs, she takes a little time to get warmed up and stretch her muscles, and then lets loose! Jazzy is available to meet you any time you want at the Animal Care Center in Brooklyn.”

Behavior: Experienced Home

Jazzy came in as a stray, so her past behaviors in a home are unknown. The finder did state Jazzy is destructive in the home. During SAFER Jazzy came into the assessment room calm and relaxed, she was friendly and social towards the assessor. She allowed all handling items to be conducted without issue. Jazzy joins the game during the tag interaction and during the resources portion of the assessment Jazzy was easy to handle when engaged with the item. Jazzy is reported to show destructive behavior in the home, we are unaware of what, if any, attempts were made to remedy this behavior but we suggest to future adopters that Jazzy will need to be provided with physical and mental stimulation and with a variety of appropriate and engaging chew toys so Jazzy can engage in necessary chewing behavior without damage to human objects. The behavior department feels she can be suitable for an experience adopter.

Look: 2. Dog pulls out of Assessor’s hands each time without settling during three repetitions.

Sensitivity: 1. Dog leans into the Assessor, eyes soft, soft and loose body, open mouth.

Tag: 1. Dog assumes play position and joins the game. Or dog indicates play with huffing, soft ‘popping’ of the body, etc. Dog jumps on Assessor once play begins.

Squeeze 1 & 2: 1. Dog gently pulls back her paw.

Toy: 1. Dog settles close, keeps a firm grip and is loose and wiggly. She does not place her body between you and the toy.

Dog-dog: Jazzy initially is high energy and solicits play with bows and bounces. She engages in running/chase play with chest bumps and paws slaps but constantly shakes off during the session. It appears that she can tolerate a high energy player but is still somewhat uncomfortable during long bouts without breaks.

“I AM GOING OUT!! WOOOO HOOOO!” This little girl is all capital letters! She is an adorable compact youngster in a perfectly groomed tan coat with gorgeous markings on her face. She is all about friendship and tail wags, and fun. She may be housetrained ‘going’ as soon as we were out the door. Her tail wags non stop as she made friends with a big German Shepherd we met in the park – she seems to love other dogs and was hoping for a play date. Scampering on the leash, but not pulling, Cheryl does a little ‘bunny hop’ of fun and energy as we walk. When it came time for photos she put on her serious face and posed beautifully and quietly. What a good girl she is!! Cheryl is fun, funny, affectionate and energetic. She would love a family who has lots of time to play with her and take her for long walks. Her compact size and winning, friendly personality will make her a welcome addition to your home. She’s hoping you ask to meet her today.

Helper dog: A1071773 Jack Daniels previously lived with adults and a 4 year old. The owner stated Jack Daniels is relaxed and played somewhat rough towards the adults and children. The owner mentioned Jack Daniels lived with two other cats and was relaxed and respectful. The owner describes Jack Daniels as friendly, affectionate, playful, confident and excitable. It was reported by the owner Jack Daniels is house trained, has a medium activity level and well behaved when home alone. At intake it was reported jack had loose body posture, then his behavior changed and he began to growl and bare teeth at the counselor, he did not allow all handling. During SAFER Jack Daniels came into the assessment room calm, he was a bit social towards the assessor. Not all handling items were able to be conducted as Jack Daniels low growled at the assessor when attempting to collar him. He displayed minimal interest in the toy item during this portion of the assessment. When on leash for a dog interaction with another dog on leash Jack Daniels approaches the helper dog with his tail above spine and his body a bit tense. In light of this behavior we feel that placement with a rescue who can provide positive reinforcement-based behavior modification is the best option at this time. Toy: 1. Minimal interest in Toy, dog smells, then turns away. Dog-dog: 3. Dog approaches the helper dog with his tail above spine, body a bit tense and ears erect.

05/05/2016 GROUP BEHAVIOR EVALUATION
Exam Type GROUP BEHAVIOR
Jack Daniels’s previous owner reported that he becomes stiff and alert around other dogs ever since he was attacked by a stray. During the attack he bit the stray dog in defense. When off leash with other dogs, Jack Daniel approaches the gate with a high tail but did not seem focus on neither the dog nor handlers. When attempting to tighten his collar before letting him in the pen with the other dog Jack Daniels growled and bared his teeth while head flipping towards the handler’s hand. Due to this concerning behavior he was not allowed to further interact with the greeter dog with the gate open.

A volunteer writes: Let’s go ! Let’s play ! What are you waiting for…..Such an engaging gal Abby is…I wish I was her age and a dog too because she is one top of the line playgroup partner. She is so playful, playbows to males and females, spins in excitement, offer paw slaps….She is so beautiful to watch, racing exuberantly through open pens….With people too, she is very friendly. Abby makes you feel welcome, one of the pack. Her wide smile, permanently wagging tail and her laughing bright eyes make you want to join in what ever she is doing, going after a ball, chasing each other or tugging at a toy…She rarely mouths and will stop if requested…She loves treats and will sit at once for them. She is so obedient and eager to please… She is a lady on the go but enjoys caresses and the lap just like any other pooch. She pulls a little on the leash and does her business on the way. Abby is a joy, a real sunshine and a breath of fresh air who will brighten the days and nights of whoever will be lucky enough to have her as a pet. Come and meet her soon at the Manhattan Care Center. Abby(who might quite obviously have a Boston Terrier up her family tree) is waiting for you… evelyne cumps For video, copy and paste the following link into your browser: https://youtu.be/VYInHRnD1Rk
