ITS Podcast Episode 32: STIRPE. Autonomous Driving in Unstructured Environments, with Leopoldo Acosta

http://itsp.cicei.com/?p=823

Happy New Year to all of you!! Welcome back! Thanks for listening the ITS Podcast!

For this chapter we have interviewed professor Leopoldo Acosta, from the University of La Laguna in Spain, about their intelligent vehicle, VERDINO (national research project STIRPE, DPI2013-46897-C2-1-R). That is not the usual intelligent vehicle for roads. Instead, it is a platform developed to operate in unstructured zones, like pedestrian zones. So it has to deal with humans in a closer than usual way for intelligent vehicles. Don’t miss it, it is very interesting!

We also have our usual News Minisection by Maryam Kaveshgar with some very interesting news, and the Transportation in History by Mehran Shirazi. Have you ever wondered why is it red amber and green? You’ll hear the answer soon!

ITS Podcast Episode 31: 2400Km of Autonomous Driving with Prof. Raul Rojas. Special Issue about the IEEE ITSS Spanish Chapter’s DLS talk

http://itsp.cicei.com/?p=803

We have prepared a special episode about two events coming from the Spanish Chapter of the ITS Society!

First, this chapter has organized a best ITS PhD and Master thesis award. We got to interview the PhD Awardee, professor David Vazquez. His thesis title was “Domain Adaptation of Virtual and Real Worlds for Pedestrian Detection”. Are you into computer vision and you bored of  objects in real world scenes? Well, these smart guys in the Barcelona have a very nice idea, using a Virtual World to train that detectors.

Additionally, this chapter has organized another talk within the IEEE ITS Society Distinguished Lecture Series. The Chapter president, Prof. Miguel Angel Sotelo, from University of Alcala invited and introduced professor Raul Rojas, from the Free University of Berlin. He came to talk about Autonomous Driving and his lab’s recent challenging and exciting experiment. They sent their automated prototype for a 2400Km journey in Mexico. We also have some very interesting comments from professor Rojas.

BOOK REVIEW

We have a new book comment from Professor Haluk Eren, this time about the book “Vehicle Safety Communications: Protocols, Security, and Privacy”, written by Luca Delgrossi and Tao Zhang. ”. Don’t miss it!
