At midnight, many families will light firecrackers in front of the house to scare away any bad spirits and bring luck for the new year. The red paper from the firecrackers remain scattered in front of doorways usually until the 2nd day of the Lunar New Year. It is considered unlucky to use the broom on the 1st day of the Lunar New Year. We don't want to sweep away any good luck!
