: the problem is that you have to have healthcare, for two main reasons. First, because uninsured people cost money to hospitals -- and thus to everyone -- when they run into emergencies, not to mention to themselves (going broke). Second, because healthy people need to contribute to the pool of money. That is really the definition of "insurance".
The only way for that to work is to have a mandated minimum.
I would personally have preferred free healthcare provided by the government for all the needs that people usually have. If I want to go above and beyond that level of care (faster access to doctors, specialised care, non-standard procedures, elective procedures, etc.) then I'd pay for that privilege. That's how other, modern democracies do it. But that wouldn't fly in the US.
