When scientists stray, their peers don't hesitate to call them out.

Except in the areas of climate science and evolution, where, as we all know, all scientists are in a lockstep conspiracy to conceal the TRUTH. <eyeroll>

Genetically modified organisms have become the world’s most controversial food. But the science is more clear-cut.

+Rachel F Miller GMO means "Genetically Modified Organism." It's a nearly meaningless acronym because organisms have been getting "genetically modified" by natural selection since life began. We also see "genetic modification" caused by artificial selection everywhere. People who cross-breed dogs and flowers to create new species with combinations of desirable traits is a perfect example.

“Each time a man stands up for an ideal, or acts to improve the lot of others, or strikes out against injustice, he sends forth a tiny ripple of hope, and those ripples build a current which can sweep down the mightiest walls of oppression and resistance.”

Yes that's right but what sad is man should be changed to human/person and also that human/person is a minority ... The positive human is out numbered by the negative masses
So the sooner that balance shifts this planet our home will become utopia. . Mr Roddenberry for saw that and half a century later we've learnt so little :(

Great comic on Net Neutrality: what it is, why you should care, and what you can do about it.
Net Neutrality in a way we can all understand it, thanks to Michael Goodwin of Economix Comix.

That brand of anti-science known as creationism comes to the county fair.

Have to agree with the article, science, my line of work, doesn't do enough to promote itself. Cosmos has been a great high profile return to highlighting what we know to be true, rather than what some may believe, but much more needs to be done. Surveys show a growing number of people are falling into the other camp.

If you're in the Los Angeles area, and if you're up around 2:56 am tonight (early Tuesday morning), look up into the western sky. If all goes to plan, you may be able to see a Delta 2 rocket, launched from Vandenberg, carrying NASA's Orbiting Carbon Observatory 2 science satellite. OCO-2's mission is to study human impact on climate change. Live updates and streaming video:

NASA "flying saucer" test ("low density supersonic decelerator") scheduled for 11:15 am Pacific Time today (Saturday) at the US Navy's Pacific Missile Range near Kauai, Hawaii. Watch the webcast here:

<b>NASA Tests LDSD 'Flying Saucer'</b> NASA mission managers are proceeding with preparations for a launch attempt on Saturday, June 28, of a high-altitude balloon carrying the Low-Density Supersonic Decelerator (LDSD) test vehicle to the edge of space on a test flight from the U.S. Navy's Pacific Missile Range Facility in Kauai, Hawaii. At present, weather forecasted is within launch constraints. Mission managers will continue to evaluate late...

Why don't climate change deniers publish real scientific papers in real scientific journals?
http://www.slate.com/blogs/bad_astronomy/2014/01/14/climate_change_another_study_shows_they_don_t_publish_actual_papers.html
To me, one of the most fascinating aspects of climate change denial is how deniers essentially never publish in legitimate journals, but instead rely on talk shows, grossly error-laden op-eds, and hugely out-of-date claims (that were never right to start with). In 2012, National Science Board member James Lawrence Powell...

+Gary Beltrami: the problem is that you have to have healthcare, for two main reasons. First, because uninsured people cost money to hospitals -- and thus to everyone -- when they run into emergencies, not to mention to themselves (going broke). Second, because healthy people need to contribute to the pool of money. That is really the definition of "insurance".

The only way for that to work is to have a mandated minimum.

I would personally have preferred free healthcare provided by the government for all the needs that people usually have. If I want to go above and beyond that level of care (faster access to doctors, specialised care, non-standard procedures, elective procedures, etc.) then I'd pay for that privilege. That's how other, modern democracies do it. But that wouldn't fly in the US.
