+Tim Norman: the OP to the pirate show is lyrics/music/arranged by 前山田建一, which is presumably read Maeyamada Ken'ichi [ken-ichi, kenichi].

I knew he sounded familiar: He did the OST for the iPhone version of Dodonpachi Daifukkatsu.

So it turns out my bag comes to 20.1kg, or "take out a change of clothes and I'm sorted".

No photos of the Fune no kagakukan, the japanese maritime science museum in Tokyo, because it turns out it shut at the end of september, a fact that isn't mentioned on their english-language web-page and is only mentioned in their japanese-language web-page in an image that's full of text I can't properly read and is in a .gif so I can't dump it through google translate or rikai.com. So I went to Shinjuku instead, went up the tokyo metro offices, and got lost in the station and nearly missed my boat. [hint: if you have oedo line shinjuku station and oedo line shinjuku nishiguchi station within the same station complex and they go in different directions, directions to "oedo line" don't exactly cut the mustard]

Both Roy and Pat have been on my thoughts from time to time. It's not entirely real to me that I won't be able to tell them about the stuff I've seen.

No real updates will be coming for a few days, because the place I:m staying at doesn]t have wireless.

Yesterday's update is delayed because I thought I'd lost my laptop power supply [my camera, otoh, has died: I'll have to get a new one :( ]. Also, it was an interesting day: a few days before, I'd heard from a local fisherman that there was one of the old boats, a marukobune, on the other shore of lake biwa, and with a bit of digging around I was able to find the museum that held it. An hour and a half from Hikone by train.

The people who run the Kiyotaki ryokan, btw, were incredibly helpful: they gave me a lift to the station so that I could make the once-an-hour train connection, and then waited for me while I rooted around buying a present for myself.

Anyway: the Marukobune no Yakata had, true to its name, a genuine marukobune, as well as a collection of models and etceteras.

After I got off the ferry I went to the osaka human rights museum and up tsutenkaku. The osaka human rights museum aka liberty osaka is an interesting place; as near as I can figure it's setting out to normalise and contextualise cultural diversity and immigration by showing that, y'know, japan has had a lot of immigration and cultural diversity all along, from asuka era onwards. So it's got bits on the ainu and the ryuukyuuans and the korean population and the burakumin [marginalised workers in leather, &c], and saying, "look, you got this food from korea and this small-manufacturing economy from the burakumin; this diversity got you what you love about your city/you are as a minority at the heart of this city" sort of thing. I only got in shorty before closing, though, so I didn't get a good look.

After that I went up tsutenkaku, which is the most impressively twee and tacky thing I ever did see.

Ferry, tokushima, naruto, more ferry. Osaka to follow, maybe tomorrow.

Shinkansen! And arrival in Tokyo: this is from two days ago. I actually think they're not that comfortable [somewhat better than a nice bus], although maybe it's just 'cause it's the oldest high-speed rail in the country. After this there's a gap 'cause new camera: Tokyo hasn't been kind to me.

The thing is, Hikone castle isn't just the keep: there are a dozen surviving original keeps. Hikone castle has EVERYTHING: all the walls, all the grounds [now containing two schools, the city's main park, and a smallish university], both moats, most of the original defensive buildings, the daimyou's palace [closed for reconstruction :( ], the palace gardens, the stables, EVERYTHING.

It's also quite pretty, even by the fairly high standards of smallish japanese castles.

Something for dad: this is the toilet at the Small World guesthouse. I've got some nice architecture photos, it's a lightly-converted machiya, urban house, but this thing is pretty clever, and I don't think I've seen anything like it.
