Saturday just before noon, tourists posted photos of Nepal’s World Heritage sites, walking side by side with Nepalese residents of Kathmandu. Moments later, they fell to the ground as intense ground shaking announced the rupture of a roughly 170 kilometer-long (about 100 miles) swath of a deadly fault system below the city.

Simultaneously, mountain climbers at camps along the route to the summit of Mount Everest were jolted from tents or tracks and watched in horror as massive chunks of snow and ice were dislodged by the magnitude 7.9 earthquake. Over the week following this devastating, shallow earthquake, remote communities throughout the region will tally death and building destruction tolls. And the watching world will gasp at the destruction.

The Himalayas region is particularly vulnerable to earthquakes. But Nepal is only one of many popular destinations that carry similar dangers, many of which tourists can prepare for.

SEATTLE—All climbers on the Nepal side of Mount Everest have left the mountain and the climbing season is over following a deadly earthquake that left thousands dead in Nepal and dozens of climbers killed or injured after an avalanche swept across the basecamp area, according to guiding companies and individual climbers.

Teams attempting to climb the north side of Everest, the Tibet side, were called back to basecamp over the weekend and were holding discussions with Chinese officials about whether any summit attempts will be possible in the remaining weeks of the spring climbing season, according to Adrian Ballinger, a guide for the Olympic Valley, California-based Alpenglow Expeditions.

Eric Simonson with International Mountain Guides said their team came down with others on the Nepal side who had been trapped above the Khumbu Icefall, which was impassable after the avalanche swept away a fixed route through that section.

“These will be the last of the climbers on the mountain,” he said in a Monday blog post.

I’d been told that there was an incredible diversity and volume of wildlife in the country of Botswana, so on my last full day in Zimbabwe I elected to do a day safari in Chobe National Park, which is located in Botswana, just an hour’s drive from Victoria Falls. In this part of Africa, four countries come together along the banks of the Zambezi River: Zimbabwe, Zambia, Botswana, and Namibia, and it is quite easy to go back and forth between them.

PASLANG, Nepal — There is almost nothing left of this village but enormous piles of broken red bricks and heaps of mud and dust.

One of those piles was once Bhoj Kumar Thapa’s home, where his pregnant wife pushed their 5-year-old daughter to safety in a last, desperate act before it collapsed and killed her during Saturday’s earthquake.

On Tuesday, Thapa and others in Paslang were still waiting for the government to deliver food, tents — any kind of aid — to this poor mountain village near the epicenter of the quake that killed more than 4,700 people, injured over 8,000 and left tens of thousands homeless.

“When I got home, there was nothing,” said Thapa, an army soldier. “Everything was broken. My wife — she was dead.”

Tapestry of Culture - The Miao Ethnic Group—Part 1

If you’ve seen Shen Yun’s vibrant and joyous Miao ethnic dance, and heard the crisp and delightful chimes of the dancers’ silver headpieces and adornments, it may come as a surprise that behind the vivacious display, the Miao people have endured a tough and arduous past.

Nowadays, the Miao people live in China’s mountainous southwestern regions. But going back 5,000 years, this ethnic group originated from the middle sections of the Yangtze River. Legend has it that their leader was a cruel dictator. He started a war to overthrow the Yellow Emperor, but failed in his quest. As a result, his people either became captives, or were forced to escape to the south.

The Miao’s bitter fate did not end there. Any place they would choose to settle in would in turn be ravaged by natural disasters or be engulfed by wars. The Miao people had no choice but to constantly seek out safer land. The ancient people had a saying that throughout the lifetime of a Miao person, they would have to “drink from a thousand wells, and live in ten-thousand homes.”

So, how does an ethnic group that’s endured the turmoil of a vagrant past develop their own culture? Be sure to read next week's post to find out!
