For people struggling with periodic or chronic back pain, read our article on 5 helpful tips to assist you with with back pain. Below is our 4 easy stretches you can do at home as part of your wellness routine to overcome and manage back pain:

1. Cat-camel back stretch
On your hands and knees, slowly alternate between arching and rounding your back so that all three sections of your spine-lumbar (lower), thoracic (middle) and cervical (upper)-extend together and then flex together. Do this slowly and gently, and don’t force it. One cycle will take three to four seconds. Repeat stretch five or six times.

2. Child’s Pose Stretch
Sit on your shins on a mat. Extend your arms straight above your head and bend at your hips to lower your torso towards the mat. Rest your palms face down on the mat while keeping your arms fully extended. Your head should be positioned so you are looking down towards the floor. Feel the stretch in your back and hold for 30 seconds.

3. Knee to Chest Stretch
Lie down on your back on a mat with your arms by your sides and your legs fully extended. Lift your left leg off of the mat and bring it close to your chest. Feel the stretch in your glutes and lower back. Hold for 30 seconds and repeat with the opposite leg.

4. Bridge Stretch
Lie on your back with your arms by your sides and your knees bent with feet flat of the floor, shoulder-width apart, and toes pointing straight ahead. Keeping your head and upper back firmly on the ground, lift your butt until your back and the ground make a 45-degree angle. Lower your body and repeat 10 times.

Back pain is increasingly one of the most common ailments that we get to deal with here at Massage To Wellness. This range from a simple strain or injury, stress related to chronic back conditions. Fortunately, most of the time back pain is short term and goes away after one or two massage treatments. But if you experience chronic back pain, you may benefit from making certain everyday adjustments. Here are 5 helpful tips to assist with back pain:

1. Get it checked out: if back pain last more than a couple of days, best to get it checked out by a professional. For tightness, spasms and burning pain could indicate a muscle problem and can be dealt with by a massage therapist. Sharp / stabbing pain, pins and needles and numbness could indicate a pinched nerve and a chiropractor would be a better option.
2. Limit bed rest: studies show that people with short-term low-back pain who rest feel more pain and have a harder time with daily tasks than those who stay active.
3. Exercise & improve flexibility: Activity is often the best medicine for back pain. While important not to overdo it so the pain becomes worse, keeping the muscles stretched and active will help speed up recovery. Ensure you do exercises that support your spine.
4. Stretches & posture: throughout the day, using good body posture goes a long way in warding off the onset and severity of back pain. Whether sitting or standing, one should do so with their back straight, chest out, and chin up.
5. Lifestyle: in most cases making small adjustments to your lifestyle will help manage and prevent back pain. For example, an office worker that spends a lot of time behind the desk may experience neck and shoulder pain. By investing in a therapeutic chair and standing up every hour to take a short walk could help prevent back pain. Whether it is stress, a bad mattress and sleeping patterns, it is important to find the cause of your discomfort to ensure the problem doesn’t return.

Of course we believe that massage is a great tool to help with back pain – we are here to assist you on your wellness journey!

4 Reasons why you should book for a Sports/Deep Tissue massage

1. Sport vs. Deep Tissue: We put these two therapies under one category as they use similar techniques, but by definition there is a slight difference between them. A deep tissue massage is pretty much what it says – firm pressure to manipulate deeper tissues in the body. Generally a deep tissue massage is done across the entire body to release tension. A sports massage on the other hand, focuses on specific target areas such as back or legs to help prevent or to recover from injuries.

2. It’s for everyone: Anyone can benefit from this massage; from athletes (pre- & post event and maintenance), people with injuries (such sprains and muscle pain) or just for stress release (tension in the back and shoulders).

3. Customised: During the treatment your therapist will use a combination of techniques to suit your individual requirements; including trigger point release, joint mobilisation and passive stretching such as soft tissue release and myofascial release.

4. Benefits: includes increased blood circulation, release of stiffness and tension, detox, restores mobility and flexibility and increases recovery time.

Our Top 5 Tips for Winter Wellness

It may be cold outside, but winter needn’t be the unhealthiest time of year for you and your family. Here are five ways to make sure that, even when your body is telling you to hibernate, you can keep healthy and fit, no matter what the weather’s like.

1. Stay active: we know we need to exercise, but it is hard to stay motivated during the colder winter months. Try indoor activities such as Body Dynamix or yoga that won’t leave you out in the cold. A Hot Stone or Aromatherapy massage is a perfect way to warm up tense muscles and is also relaxing at the same time.
2. Get outdoors: sunlight helps our bodies produce Vitamin D that is vital for calcium absorption. Try visiting outdoor markets or a walk along the beach when the weather allows.
3. Rest up: Regular sleep is vital to staying healthy. Don’t let yourself get run down. Those who aren’t well rested are more likely to get sick.
4. Eat more fruit & vegetables: we need extra vitamins and minerals during winter to help our bodies fight infections, so make sure you stock up on those greens. Soups, broths and stews are delicious and can be packed full of veggies.
5. Stay protected: ensure your family is protected from nasty bugs and viruses. Our Advanced Repair Tissue Oil and Body Butter is a great alternative and infused with essential oils that are anti-bacterial and anti-fungal.

Yours in health,
MASSAGE TO WELLNESS TEAM
