New York - Long Island and Good Company
Amazing as it is, the New York metropolis does end. Out past the confines of the city jungle, down miles and miles of rail road track, there lies Port Jefferson on Long Island. A small town with a big medical center, it's the home of Professor Andrew Flescher, who I spent time with at California State University, Chico.
Seeing the smaller side of New York state was a great way to cap the East Coast adventure. The beaches at Port Jefferson are beautiful and as tranquil as Times Square is hectic.
Port Jefferson may be a one horse town, but it has drawn to it good people with great minds. A colleague of Andy's, Dr. Stephanie Brown, joined us for dinner, and it was a pleasure to find such good conversation as our journey wore down.
Lauren and I had a lot of fun talking with Andy and Stephanie about the biological, social, and ethical consequences of living forever, if it was even possible. And of course, no serious discussion with Professor Flescher is complete without a dissertation of The Big Lebowski!
I'm grateful for having such a meaningful trip to New York, and especially to Lauren for bringing so much planning, inspiration, and ambition to our travel plans.
