Google's new skip through the history of the web.  Feels like one of Spielberg's uplifting movie montages.

Giving the robots spinning blades is not how we stay atop the food chain.

This morning, Jack wanted to get eye drops, allegedly because he loooooves his eye drops, but actually because he loooooves the videos he gets as an incentive.  So I explained to him that we were done with the eye drops, and he was not going to watch any videos this morning.  So he said that, no, he wanted two videos.  I then said no, but complimented him on his anchoring.  He said "what?", and I started to explain the concept of anchoring to him.

And then a little voice in my head screamed WHAT ARE YOU DOING!!!!!!  No possible good can come of teaching negotiation skills to a preschooler!  Either he won't understand, in which case you just wasted everyone's time, or he will understand, in which case WHAT HAVE YOU DONE.

So I changed the subject.  Probably to the importance of wearing pants.

I've been reading a lot of articles recently with people talking about how this or that tech company is going to "disrupt Hollywood".  They're kind of missing the point about what hollywood is... I may have written a rant about it on tumblr.

If only it was possible to actually do this on the internet:
Ladies and gentlemen, may I present to you the cover of my upcoming essay collection The Mallet of Loving Correction, drawn by Nate Taylor. I love it. The book itself will be out on September 13 and is available for pre-order here:

I love the entertainment business and I like to think I've seen an episode or two of pretty much every TV show... I WAS WRONG

Fascinating use of standard video to watch someone's pulse.

This morning I had something fascinating happen.  A great experience while driving in traffic.

We were stop-and-go where the 405 meets the 101 and a gentlemen in a black prius pulls up next to me, looking to merge into my lane from the on-ramp.  We're both stopped and he looks over with a big smile and (via gesture) asks if he can merge into the lane ahead of me.  Couldn't have been more polite or friendly.  It made my day to make room for him to merge.

I think he had a LA City id badge hanging from his rearview mirror.

So to whoever that guy was, thank you. Hooray for civility, and for friendly faces in the midst of traffic insanity.
