Christopher Kennedy Lawford spent 20 years in the film and television industries as an actor, lawyer, executive, and producer. He is the author of three New York Times best-selling books, Symptoms of Withdrawal: A Memoir of Snapshots and Redemption (2005), Moments of Clarity (2009) and Recover to Live (2013). Addiction and mental health concerns are family diseases that can stress the family to breaking point, impact the stability of the home, the family’s unity, #mentalhealth, physical health, finances, and the overall family system.

Living with addiction and mental health concerns can put family members and carers under unusual stress. Routines might be constantly interrupted by unexpected or even frightening experiences that are part of living with addiction and other mental health concerns.

It would be rare in today’s world to meet a family that is not impacted in some way, large or small, by an addiction of some description - or other mental health concern. Family members can become desperate, stressed, anxious and indeed mentally addicted themselves - to “the addict” or “unwell person” in their family.

4.Everyone helps each other

After finishing the withdrawal process, people in treatment will begin attending group therapy sessions.

In group therapy, stories are shared and others in the group offer support to each other. Cognitive behavioural therapy helps people to identify and cope with underlying triggers that can cause addiction. It’s a really inclusive and supportive way to get back on the right path in life and move into recovery.

In August last year, a group of thirty practitioners gathered in Curl Curl to begin their journey to becoming certified sex addiction therapists.
Over the five day course, Kenneth Adams instructed the group and brought not only serious insight and years of practical experience but also humour to their time together.
