LORRAINE Wood has told the story of her family’s cycle of addiction countless times. It has helped many of the 7000 addicts who have sought treatment at South Pacific Private Treatment Centre in Curl Curl.
Now the 78-year-old, who co-founded and owns the ­facility, has written her memoir Love & Addiction in the hope it will help families caught in the addiction trap. “My parents were both ­alcoholics and I married an alcoholic,” said Mrs Wood, who said her childhood was blighted by physical and emotional neglect. While Mrs Wood said she was never an addict herself, she was an enabler.

A recent article in the weekend Australian shared how awareness of depression and anxiety is growing at a rate of knots, says Lorraine Wood, who credits this to people talking about it and accepting their own mental health condition.
“The need for help is ever growing,” she says. “By 2020, ­depression is going to be the biggest diagnosed disease in the world, and that’s what most people come in for."

What happens if your family members are resistant or reluctant to engage in a four day Family Program? It might be that they are not ready to look at their own way of being within the family system. There are a whole host of reasons why family members may be resistant. Whilst we can invite, we can’t force.

"15 years ago I was an everyday North Shore mum, with 2 kids in private school. My typical day consisted of helping out in the school tuckshop, playing tennis, having lunch with friends, going to art classes etc. We were a normal middle class family, who went on family holidays etc.
Then, out of blue, my youngest child came to me and admitted that she had been using drugs – just for fun and to fit in with her peers in the beginning, but it had escalated to more serious using, and she was really frightened of what was happening to her."

One of the most challenging aspects of the disease of addiction is the powerlessness that friends and family members feel as they watch the problems unfold.

The reality is that denial is one of the symptoms of the disease, and minimisation of the problems is very common in mental illness and trauma related conditions as well.
