Can't find a better bargain for a Steven Star Joint. Been there 4 times now, and ate and drank well for reasonable prices each visit.

The overall experience at El Rey is good, with decent food, excellent margaritas, and a kitschy, inventive interior that makes for a good spot to hang out with friends. The have a great weekly happy hour with margaritas and $1 tacos (although the tacos are often "meh" at best), but the bar is relatively small. You can enjoy happy hour specials at your table however, and you'll find that there are a lot of groups doing just that, so you don't have to feel too bad about being loud once you've had a few margaritas. Definitely try the guava margarita.

Good food, very tasty. Really no critics possible on the food, except if you don't like mexican food (hot !). Concerning the drinks : too many ice cubes deleting the drinks.

El Rey was definitely in the Cinco de Mayo spirit, there was a mariachi band that played both inside the restaurant and out on the street. There were food specials as well. I had a pork taco with pickled onions, a Cinco de Mayo special pork taco with pineapple salsa and avocado cream, and a steak taco with a variety of toppings, and the habanero agave fried chicken wings. The tacos were very very small, about 4” wide, but piled high, so they were filling and very tasty. I’m not sure if the size was the Cinco de Mayo special size or if it is the size of their regular menu. The customer service was horrible. After ordering I was ignored by my server, she never came to ask how my meal was, and since I was still hungry after my first tacos, I had to flag down another server to get a menu and to find my server to order more food. I also ordered an additional glass of wine which did not arrive for another 10 minutes (right before my wings) even though I was sitting right next to the bar. I could have gone to the bar and ordered and gotten served quicker. I wanted dessert, but after the long waits I just gave up. The restaurant was packed for the holiday, so if they had a few more servers working, perhaps the experience would have been different. The hostess and the bartender were both very helpful and attentive.

Good food with great presentation in a fun, off-beat environment. Always a good choice!
