Whenever I can I head into the villages of China to get a look on what is real in the world. Even the remotest parts of the world are modernizing rapidly, and the old vanishing. Here is my portrait of what is vanishing in China. https://photos.app.goo.gl/yPTx8te1BAYUjGWm7

Last Christmas our family floated through Bali for the holiday. My son Tywen made a 3-minute visual poem about this brief visit. He got the vibe right. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EWxcVzcLnn4

Brilliantly insightful article. "In its previous incarnation, [globalization] was trade-based and Western-led. Today, globalization is being driven by digital technology and is increasingly led by China and other emerging economies." https://www.foreignaffairs.com/articles/world/2018-04-16/globalization-not-retreat

I get joy making things like this second rack for my small hardware trays in my workshop. This one (left) from 2x4s, now installed next to welded metal one (right).

Useful observation:

Network TV in the early 1970s had much in common with Facebook today. It was the everyperson’s refuge, a groundbreaking technology that had morphed into a mindless escape for the masses. It was also a primary source of news, which wedged awkwardly in between the soap operas, comedies, and crime shows. As such, it was widely accused of distorting, oversimplifying, and sensationalizing the vital information of democracy in a crass bid for ratings (read: advertising dollars). Finally, it was a medium that concentrated enormous cultural power in a few corporations—ABC, CBS, and NBC.
