Should I post pointers here to my old essays on replacing the DNS? The important point is not to replace the DNS with another central source of leased identity but rather take an approach that separates mechanism from policy and monetization.

That said there is an interim approach like with bit.ly offering identifiers that never get reused.

I wrote http://rmf.vc/FUSS in 1999 and http://rmf.vc/DNSSafeHaven in 2001. I'll look further for appropriate writings to explain why the very idea of a central repository of identity and addressing as the antithesis of an Internet defined by users. My most recent is http://rmf.vc/InternetNativePolicies.

(I'd add pointers to IP postings but that site seems to be down at the moment)

Because we can do the web and other high value applications we assume that the Internet works. But it's the simple things that are the building blocks of the future and, as I explain in http://rmf.vc/CILight - we can't do something as simple as sending one bit from a light switch to a light bulb without jumping through a myriad of hoops and, in the end, that's not enough. The first step is to get out of thinking we communicate within pipes ...

Similar scenes here in Los Altos, California, a city that prides itself on its "rural feel". It sure doesn't look rural when you look up in most areas.

And it's even worse! Even if Comcast is "neutral" it has its own private lanes. They need to be just like others in going over IP using common facilities! They must not own TWC nor any pipes. Nor should Google.

Rule #14? There is a difference between how it works and how it can work much better as we learn new possibilities for "works"
