The 14th-Century Persian poet Hafiz’s work is not just very beautiful – it is useful too. Hafiz can teach us how to get the most out of our lives, writes Daniel Ladinsky.

Rosenblum writes: Now it is clear: we are seeing a coup d'etat. And its perpetrators, aided by citizens' apathy and wishful thinking, don't even need to gas up tanks or muzzle the media. This is exactly how democracies die.

It is one of Europe’s oldest people, yet has a Muslim majority. The whole nation is ethnically homogenous, yet split among three religions.

Unbearable noise. Unbearably loud music piped in everywhere, sometimes two or three different kinds of music from different speaker systems in the same space, and none of it music I would choose to listen to. Even after it closes, such as after you've watched a late night movie at the theatre, it reverberates with noise. I was sitting near the front entrance an hour after it closes and I could hear conversations all around even though there was no one anywhere in sight. workers working. And they make you walk. No places to sit. And impossible to find a close exit. You just walk and walk and walk. Elevators are placed as far from the entrances as they could place them. Escalators placed so you have to walk from one to another. With no place to sit. This is no place to shop if you are disabled, or elderly or with young kids. Same old same old shops you would find in any old mall anywhere and same old same old fast food. I tried a chinese-japanese restaurant. It was playing yet another unbearably loud form of music trying to drown out the music from the mall. It had some strange asian menu of chinese and japanese and thai dishes and the food was eminently forgettable. at least i didn't get sick. not cheap. by the time i was finished shopping i was exhausted. i didn't have the strength to go on. i could barely reach the taxi. it took me forever to find the exit after it took me forever to find the elevator. and the place is just plain ugly. one of the ugliest interiors in any mall in istanbul. certainly one of the noisiest. and on top of the noise this dumb penetrating piped in music, lousy music. it's only attraction is its size. it's too big to take in in one visit. there must be some saving grace somewhere but with no place to sit down, I am not highly motivated to look or go back again. I can't think of a single reason for anybody to go out of their way to go shopping there. Boring.ugly noisy and not friendly to old people, not friendly to disabled people and definitely not friendly to families with young kids.
