OK, so while I loved AD&D, I had a friend who played B/X and really appreciated these awesome little books. First, they can't be beat for clarity and sheer ease of use. Yeah, AD&D was comprehensive. But forget about actually learning the game by reading its rulebooks! In 125 pages (less than the Player's Handbook) you get everything you need up to 14th level. And who needs more than that, when it comes down to it? But, unlike BECMI, it retained old-school credentials with simple design and the artwork of Dee, Otus, and Willingham. This remains an UNBEATABLE package and an indispensable edition...

Say what you will. But AD&D was a visual triumph over OD&D and likely seemed to Gygax the ultimate realization of his game...

Interesting. I was inclined to say I prefer my paper books, but we sell (and use) digital rulebooks ourselves (although I tend to print out ours)...
