Psychological Consequences of Back Pain

Back pain is the second leading cause of disability in the United States, and still many people overlook how profoundly their #mindset is influencing the #pain. Your #attitude can contribute to your back pain or make it worse, based on how you view the pain and if you let it control you, but you can also take mastery over it. Chiropractors can help improve back pain with spinal adjustments and other treatments, but the wellness-centered, holistic approach of chiropractic will always consider your mindset toward your #body and if that can also be improved.

Your Brain and Emotional Stress

People that have #anxiety and emotional distress often times can’t control their thoughts and emotions and focus solely on the pain. Emotional distress can cause you to expect the worst, and if you are always anticipating more pain it’s easy for back pain to consume you. When your brain is in panic mode the already painful experience becomes intolerable, so it is important to focus your attention on something that gives you joy and not think about the pain. People who have suffered from injuries may be worried about beginning to exercise, but exercise under professional guidance is one of the best ways of clearing your body of stressors.

Controlling the Pain

Chiropractic care encourages regular adjustments to keep back pain under control, and between your adjustments, you can always work on improving your #mindset. Many people find that experience of getting an adjustment to be pleasant in itself, and they similarly enjoy other common physical therapies such as electric muscle stimulation. Talk #therapy is helpful for many people dealing with the stress of chronic pain and can help you recognize patterns in your behavior that affect your overall wellness. Deep-breathing exercises and meditation are very helpful in managing stress, and these are often incorporated into workouts like yoga to improve the mind-body connection. Too many people suffering from back pain become reliant on painkillers without ever treating the cause or dealing with the emotional stress involved. Chiropractors will not recommend prescription medication, so if you are on painkillers after an accident or injury it is important to consider both your physical and mental wellness in your long-term plan for managing pain. Remember that your attitude is just as important as what you are feeling physically. Learning to regulate your emotional reactions to pain and improving your mindset will go a long way towards feeling healthier. The sciatic nerve is the longest and the widest nerve in the human #body. It originates in the lower spinal cord, and extends through the lower back, each hip, the buttocks and legs. This nerve connects the spinal column to the legs and feet, making it responsible for any pain or sensation to the lower extremities. Chiropractic #care always aims to restore the best possible function to the spinal cord and nervous system, and helps alleviate sciatic nerve pain.

What Is Sciatica?

Irritation at the nerve’s origin on the spinal column is the most common cause of sciatic nerve pain, or sciatica. To patients, it usually feels like a sharp or burning pain down one leg and buttock, or both. Other symptoms include numbness or tingling in the hips, buttocks, and legs. In the most severe cases, a patient may experience total loss of feeling or weakness in the legs, and loss of bowel and bladder control. These can be signs there is actual nerve damage and they should seek immediate medical attention.

Why Chiropractic Care?

Sciatic nerve pain is really a #symptom of a herniated disc in the spinal cord. If one slips out of place, it can pinch the nerve responsible for sensations to and from any part of the lower body. #Chiropractic adjustments are key to restoring healthy function to the spinal column. Kids are starting athletics at a young age, parents are more cautious about doctors that over prescribe medication, and we all know kids are prone to stumbles and falls! Why Do Children Need Adjustments

There is no age recommendation for beginning #chiropractic care. Even infants who have suffered trauma to the spine during a natural or C-section birth can receive a minor adjustment. Babies that have trouble latching to breastfeed can often be helped with gentle adjustments to ease discomfort in the neck and shoulders. Many chiropractic benefits for children are the same as for adults, like overall musculoskeletal health and function, and improving immunity and sleep. Adjustments can be performed on children using gentle pressure. Some parents are uncomfortable at the thought of their small child’s bones being cracked or popped the way they can feel their own shift during an adjustment. However, a child’s bones are still forming. This means a chiropractor can use the same techniques on a child but with much less force, so these adjustments are performed gently and quickly for maximum benefit to the child.

Chiropractic adjustments are often recommended for child patients simply because it can correct issues particular to children. Chronic ear infections in a small child can feel like a vicious cycle, but this irritation is often related to misalignment in the neck. Restoring that balance can improve middle ear drainage and prevent further infections. Allergies and asthma start to surface in young children, and the two are closely linked to the respiratory system. A misalignment in the spine can confuse a body’s immune system and cause a reaction with respiratory symptoms, so children should be seen by a chiropractor before being treated for allergies.

Effects of Inflammation in the Body

Inflammation is our body’s response to outside threats such as #stress, infection, or toxic chemicals. When the immune system suspects danger from one of these factors, it responds by activating #proteins meant to protect cells and tissues, which results in joint inflammation, heart disease, and makes it difficult to fight wounds and illness. In a #healthy situation, inflammation can be friendly to our body. However, once immune cells start to overreact, the inflammation will cause us harm. The good news is that you can take control of preventing inflammation by cutting out highly inflammatory foods like sugar and grains and eating more lean protein, vegetables, and healthy fats.

Signs of Inflammation

Symptoms of inflammation will depend on whether the reaction is acute or chronic. Acute signs of inflammation may include pain, redness, immobility, and swelling, while chronic signs of inflammation may include fatigue, mouth sores, chest pain, abdominal pain, and joint pain. An acute inflammation is one that arises rapidly and becomes severe in a short amount of time. During a bout of acute inflammation, one may develop a cold and flu virus, sinusitis, or dermatitis. Chronic inflammation can last months or even years and may be caused by an underlying condition.

Foods that Cause Inflammation

By eliminating these foods from your #diet, you can avoid inflammation.

Refined carbohydrates such as white bread
Margarine, shortening, lard
French fries and other fried foods
Soda and other beverages with added sugar
Red meat and processed meat
Foods that Fight Inflammation

To reduce levels of inflammation, it’s best to aim for an overall healthy diet that includes foods such as:

Olive oil
Nuts like almonds and walnuts
Fatty Fish like salmon, mackerel, and tuna
Fruits such as strawberries, blueberries, oranges
Reducing Inflammation in the Body

You can reduce inflammation by simply changing factors in your lifestyle. Through mind-body exercises such as yoga, and tai-chi, for as little as ten minutes a day, you can improve your immune health. Additionally, it helps to detoxify from harmful chemicals that may be lingering in your soaps and cleansers. Switch to safe, natural, cleansers that won’t cause rashy skin. You can also reduce inflammation by improving your quality of sleep and getting some #sunshine!

Chiropractic Approach to Arthritis

Chiropractic is much more than spinal manipulations. It is a philosophy of medicine that emphasizes the use of noninvasive, non-addictive means of treating pain and allowing the body to #heal itself. This approach means that most chiropractic offices offer a variety of treatments designed to improve overall wellness. This is particularly helpful when addressing one of the most common sources of pain: arthritis.

Defining Arthritis

There are over a hundred types of joint diseases that fall under the “arthritis” umbrella. Taken together, they are among the most common cause of back pain and disability in the United States. Although people may associate arthritis primarily with older adults, there are also hundreds of thousands of children and teenagers living with it.

Adjustments for Wear and Tear

The most common form of #arthritis and the type most often treated with spinal adjustments is osteoarthritis. Our joints, including those linking the vertebrae, are covered in cartilage to keep them from rubbing together. But in people with osteoarthritis, the cartilage has worn away and the bones are now uncomfortably exposed. As a result, they may feel stiff and experience the growth of bony spurs around the joints. This is the kind of arthritis that responds best to adjustments. By realigning the spine, we reduce the friction between the facet joints and reduce pressure on the spinal cord and the nerves branching off it, reducing the patient’s pain. Results are often apparent after just a few weeks of treatment.

When Swelling is an Immune Response

Other types of arthritis are associated with #inflammation of various tissues surrounding the joints. The most common of these is the autoimmune disease rheumatoid arthritis, which causes the immune system to attack the joints’ lining. Rheumatoid arthritis’s cause is unclear, but it is correlated with certain genes and behaviors such as smoking. Differentiating rheumatoid arthritis from other kinds may require blood work and imaging tests. While many chiropractors would prefer to get the inflammation under control before attempting adjustments, there are low-intensity realignment therapies such as traction available for people whose musculoskeletal systems have become more delicate. Soft tissue therapies are also available in many offices, including the use of cold lasers to reduce swelling.

Holistic Care

Chiropractors often describe what we do as complimentary and focus on prevention as well as treatment. Two of the best defenses against arthritis are regular exercise and good #nutrition. By building up their muscles, people provide better support for their joints. Three Major Types of Mattresses

Memory Foam – These types of mattresses have two core components – a polyurethane memory foam layer and a polyurethane foam core layer. Though some companies may use latex, to create the foam layers, the foam softens when you lie down on it and it molds to your body. Once you get out of #bed, it will spring back to its original shape.
Innerspring – These traditional mattresses are composed of steel coils in various configurations. These may include special layers of cushioning, a pillow top layer, and infused gel. Hybrids will have one or more layers of foam on top of the springs.

Common Signs That Your Current Mattress Isn’t Good for You

It appears worn out – Look for visual cues when changing your sheets. If your mattress is sagging in certain areas, that’s a sign that it is no longer giving your body the support that it needs.
It’s noisy – If you hear creaky springs while tossing and turning, this means your mattress has lost its strength.
Your body hurts – If you wake up feeling like you didn’t get a good night sleep and your body is filled with stiffness, numbness, aches, and pains, it’s time for a new mattress.

Finding the Best Mattress for Any Sleeper

Everyone sleeps differently, which means that there is no single mattress that works for everyone. Finding the perfect mattress will depend on if you are a stomach, back, or side sleeper. However, any sleeper should consider these things when searching for a new mattress.

Comfort and cooling – Your mattress should never leave you stiff, sore, or in pain. Also, a mattress that breathes well with provide cooling that won’t leave you waking up in a pool of your own sweat. The mattress that best suits your needs will be the most comfortable.
Spine and alignment support – When your head, neck, and spine touch that pillow they should be fully supported, no matter what your sleep position is.
Durability – A mattress is a big investment, so think about how long you want your new bed to last.
Motion isolation – If you and your partner don’t want to feel each other getting out of bed in the morning, the better the motion isolation is in a mattress, the less you will feel movement on the other side of the bed.

Back pain is one of the most common reasons people miss #work, and it’s no secret that work often contributes to back #pain. In recent years, several media outlets have warned the public about the pain and debilitation which results from sitting for too long. But standing for too long also imperils the back, as well as the legs and feet. #Chiropractors often treat cashiers, hairdressers, nurses, security screeners, custodians, and other people who are on their feet all day, but preventive measures are necessary to stop the problem from recurring.

How Standing Affects the Back

Problems in the lower limbs will have consequences further up. When peoples’ feet are painfully swollen or their leg muscles are failing, their posture is likely to get worse. They often subconsciously tilt their pelvises in an attempt to use their back muscles to compensate for tight or overworked muscles in the pelvic region, legs, or core, putting their lower backs out of alignment and increasing wear on their facet joints. Wear to the back muscles also puts uneven pressure on the spinal discs, allowing them to become misshapen and inhibiting their function as shock absorbers.

Good Habits While Standing

Ideally, workers should be able to alternate between sitting and standing throughout the day. It’s good to switch about every half hour. While standing, it may be helpful to put one foot up on a bar. In either position, desk workers should position the top of their screens to be at eye-level and tilted slightly up. They also should also put the keyboard and mouse on the same level and stand about twenty inches away from the screen. Knees should be bent slightly and be positioned directly below the hips.

The Importance of Foot Care

To prevent lower back pain, the feet are especially important to #care for. Blood pooling in the lower extremities can lead to vascular problems, which come with their own pain and can encourage bad posture. People with Chronic Venous Insufficiency should consider compression stockings. Many chiropractors now offer customized foot orthotics, which provide the feet with more support, and patients are generally discouraged from wearing flat shoes. Anti-fatigue floor mats have been shown to decrease foot and lower back pain. Patients are also advised to move their feet when turning to reach something, as opposed to twisting their torsos.

How Chiropractic Helps

Chiropractic care will likely include some sort of therapeutic #exercise as well as pain relief. Squats are recommended for many patients as a way to strengthen core and leg muscles and to improve hip flexibility. Traction, either with a machine or suspension, can reverse the pressure in spinal discs. Adjustments will put joints back in place, removing pressure from the surrounding muscles and nerves. Therapeutic massages, electric muscle stimulation, and ultrasound therapy also help to reduce muscle inflammation and deliver more nutrient-rich blood to injured soft tissues.

Chiropractic care and your long term health

Regular #chiropractic care is an important part of the long view regarding your family's health and well-being. Even though we engage in healthy lifestyle activities, events frequently occur that have a negative impact on our #health . The events themselves may be not obvious, hidden from view as a result of originating in our day-to-day environment or seemingly harmless mechanical stresses as we bump into things, trip over a crack in the sidewalk, or pick up a laundry basket filled with clothes.

But these little insults often have a cumulative effect in causing spinal misalignments and nerve interference. We're not aware of the health effects of nerve interference at the beginning. Over time, nerve irritation that results from spinal misalignments may cause neck #pain , back pain, and #headaches , and even problems with the digestive, endocrine, and immune systems.
