School of Rock House Band played a short set before the La Jolla Winterfest Parade and Festival.  The kids added some new songs (Blink 182 "Aliens Exist" and "Last Night" by The Strokes) and as they played a crowd gathered around them.  Very organic and energetic.  The crowd insisted on an encore (that was a first for us!) and they played that old standard "Seven Nation Army" by the White Stripes.  Nate's rocking the bass line in the cover photo.  His guitar "silver shadow" is in the stand behind him.

Orangetheory was the merchant business (store front) that provided our power and gave us access to their lobby as "the green room" and they were generally great sponsors.

Alec (our lead singer) did fantastic vocals on "Creep" by Radiohead... and Elijah just nailed the solo on "Good Times Bad Times"

Max (guitar and bass) and Jack (drums) were solid as always.  Jack especially was getting lots of compliments because the parade organizers made us turn down the amps... but you can't turn down drums!

See you Sunday 12/15 at the Microsoft Store in Fashion Valley.  House Band plays two sets in the afternoon.

This is an interesting startup that's been germinating for a few years.  I've been following along and am interested in seeing where they go.  Gina has been a staple of some of the weekly podcasting programs I listen to... and I've learned a lot from her discussions.

I think Meridith might get more insights from this tool since she uses Twitter and Facebook...

School of Rock House Band performed two shows at the Del Mar KidsExpo.  The Saturday show was a little rough... this was a last-minute show and the kids had only 3 rehearsals to prepare.  They still rocked... and battled thru their mistakes.  It was awesome to see them not give up.  At one point... the Nirvana song (Smells Like Teen Spirit) was unwinding and the guitar and drums got out of sync... but Nate took control... "Just keep playing!" and then after a measure he counted them back in and they picked up the chorus and finished the song.  I think they were all relieved when the set was over.  "We got thru it!"

On Sunday... they had a longer set and played just about perfect!  It was a fantastic performance and the kids were all proud of the set. "Smells Like Teen Spirit" and "Paranoid" came together just fine...and the additional songs "Creep" and "You Really Got Me" where awesome.  It was fun seeing Nate play bass and sing harmony.  I think he was channeling Michael Anthony (Van Halen era) on that song.

Another set of shows this coming Friday night.

Shout out to Rock And Roll San Diego.  They provided the gear and ran sound.  One of the best sound mixes I've heard.

There was also an indoor stage "Sponsored by Taylor Guitars" with the signage spelled wrong.  Hilarious! I hope they ask the sign vendor for a refund... but I'm sure they initialed the production work order. HA!

Dear Scripps Ranch Planning Group Chairman;

We understand a developer is seeking your approval to change zoning from office to retail on the nine acre property at the northeast corner of I-15 and Carroll Canyon Road in Scripps Ranch. The proposed site plan shows a 120,000 sf big-box and smaller strip retail uses. The Scripps Ranch Newsletter has reported the big-box would be built for a Target or Lowes. Recent speculation suggests the developer is in discussions with Wal-Mart and due to a non-disclosure agreement, the developer cannot confirm the retailer.

We oppose a big-box use at this site.

1. The traffic mitigation calls for a median along Carroll Canyon Road which would prohibit the Eucalyptus Square retail center employees and customers (Subway, Carl’s Jr., etc.)., and the 2 story office building employees and clients; from being able to turn left out of the parking lot which gives them direct and immediate access to the north and south bound I-15 onramps. Now drivers will have to travel east and make a U-turn somewhere or wind their way to Mira Mesa Boulevard or Pomerado Road to get to the freeway.

2. The proposal is inconsistent with many elements of the Community Plan in terms of traffic, lifestyle, community needs, proximity to our high school, density, freeway screening and vegetation.

3. A 120,000 sf single user can only be a Wal-Mart, Target, Lowes, Home Depot or Costco. These retailers require a regional draw for profitability. We do not need regional traffic making our small community a commercial destination. There are Wal-Marts, Targets, Costcos, Home Depots within a few minutes of our community which we easily and happily patronize.

4. Long term – What happens in a few years if the big box user decides to abandon the building due to the economy or other financial reasons? The big box then gets split up for a variety of other mid-size users. With so much space to lease out, the rent will need to be reduced and the quality of the tenant gets reduced to thrift stores, temporary uses, discount clothing stores, 99 cent stores. No thank you!

I ask you to consider the long term impact to our community and urge you to not approve a Community Plan Amendment on this property.

Thank you.

On Sunday the School of Rock House Band played two one-hour sets at the Microsoft Store in Fashion Valley Mall.  The store was pretty busy (but not as wall-to-wall crowded as the Apple store) and the event was part of an XBOX-Music promotion.  So much better than having Christmas Music blaring in the store... but a few geezers asked if they "couldn't play quieter" -- and it was a real struggle.  Still, I think it was one of the best sets they've performed so far.  The group of 5 is the smallest "house band" they've had in several years... and they have developed into a real tight group.  Jack is the heartbeat of the band and had the hardest time playing quietly.  Elijah did awesome on "Paranoid" and nailed the solo.  He's really an awesome lead guitar player... plays with lots of enthusiasm.  Nate and Max played really well too.  Max went out of tune on one of the songs and had to scramble.  Nate played guitar and bass... and was shouting loudly for AC/DC TNT... "OY! OY!"  Alec sang really well.  I think it was his best performance!

The Thanksgiving Day parking lot on I-15.  Turns out... there was a HOAX bomb threat and traffic was stopped both NB and SB on the freeway.  We just missed the closure and detour - and got trapped in stopped traffic for a little over an hour.  Once we all got our pictures and tweets about the flash mob at the Miramar exit... some industrious motorists turned around on the freeway... and made their way backwards to a point where one could cross the median and enter the SB lane of the freeway.  It was a little risky... because this solution was IN NO WAY COORDINATED by the police.  I think they just turned a blind eye, frankly, because they didn't make any effort in traffic control.  Since we were in the back 1/3 of the stopped traffic... it wasn't too difficult to take advantage of the exit strategy.  However... we witnessed a lot of odd behavior.  One guy was being a real aggressive driver (insisting on proceeding only NB) and was actively disrupting any and all attempts of people trying to turn around.  Other people mistook the movement of exiting traffic as a signal that the lanes were about to be reopened (they weren't) and we actually saw angry tweets of motorists complaining about people driving the WRONG WAY.  Since the NB freeway was closed for 3 hours.. we made the right move.  So much better to watch the news reports from the comfort of the couch.  I got some great pictures.  One... some guys that left their cars to go play football.  Another of Nate at the highway sign (with the stopped cars in the background) and one of the traffic stopped (facing southbound).  Meridith took some pictures too... and hers were used in some of the news reports.

The thing that still has me puzzled.  What kind of person gets an anonymous call about there being a bomb in their car... and finds the call credible?

Not sure how that is helpful.  Thoughtful reflection seems appropriate for the loss of life and the events that were set in motion.  The world was forever changed on that day and I'm glad I had the opportunity to have a meaningful discussion with my middle schooler about a historical event that happened within his lifetime.

This is a great program. The kids are all very supportive - the older kids are role models for the younger kids. The shows are fantastic... and really build self-confidence. Tyle Ward and all the instructors do a great job finding new themes each season. It is a real bonus having San Diego and Vista join forces on the epic albums. The parents, of course, are second to none.

Really glad I stopped in for a tasting. Great beers (naturally a must) and it gives me the same feeling I had when discovering Ballast Point and Green Flash before they became big time and their tasting rooms got crowded. Alex has got some great brewing ideas and I'll be stopping by their on a regular basis.
