Heart Month – Keep Your Heart Healthy

Incorporate movement into your day to keep your heart healthy!

Try a Walking Meditation
Get rid of nervous tension by inhaling as you take four steps, then exhaling for four steps. Repeat for at least three minutes (the longer, the better). Work up to six to eight steps per inhale and exhale

Try a Sitting Meditation
To re-center your mind and body, sit on the floor in a comfortable position with a straight back. Look at the second hand of a watch. Inhale for three seconds, then smoothly exhale for three more. Repeat for at least three minutes.

Heart Month – Keep Your Heart Healthy

There are two types of stress responses, identify yours so you can start to be more aware of how you can make changes to keep your blood pressure in check.

Overexcited stress response – If you tend to become angry, agitated, or keyed up under stress, you will respond best to stress relief activities that quiet you down.

Underexcited stress response – If you tend to become depressed, withdrawn, or spaced out under stress, you will respond best to stress relief activities that are stimulating and that energize your nervous system.

Warm up with this spicy soup recipe recommended by WellSpan wellness coaches. http://ow.ly/X0hLU
Richly satisfying, this luscious-looking soup made with red bell peppers gets a touch of heat from Thai chile. For an extra-nutty flavor, puree an additional 1/4 cup shelled pistachios with 1/4 cup water and serve the soup with a dollop of this pistachio puree on top.

WellSpan Health is an integrated health system that serves the communities of central Pennsylvania.
Introduction

Every day across central Pennsylvania, the people of WellSpan Health work together to support this non-profit mission of service—one patient, one community, one unique health care need at a time. We also collaborate with community leaders, area residents and other health care providers to make sure that inpatient, outpatient, home health and physician services are located where they can do the most good for our neighbors.

Focusing on the health of the community has inspired us to transform the way we work. We make it as simple as possible for individuals to develop a relationship with our health system and to become healthy and stay that way. Each patient’s information is available to providers at any WellSpan location through our sophisticated electronic health record, and their care is coordinated by teams of physicians, health coaches, social workers and other professionals. This is, we believe, the best way to improve health across our growing, diverse region.

WellSpan at a glance:
  • A valuable community resource that provides more than $175 million each year in charitable, uncompensated care
  • More than 12,500 employees
  • Highly skilled primary care and specialty physicians and providers, including more than 850 members of the WellSpan Medical Group
  • More than 120 patient care locations that offer services such as diagnostic imaging, laboratory, rehabilitation, primary care, retail pharmacy, walk-in health care, durable medical equipment and other essential services
  • A regional home care organization: WellSpan VNA Home Care
