James Dashner's "Maze Runner" series is okay, not great and with a few notable flaws. The basics are the same as most others of the genre - distopian future, the young rebelling against the status quo power structure, and a mystery that slowly unfolds. Add in the occasional romantic subtext and the series isn't bad but it isn't great either. The lack of depth in the narrative, dialogue and character development has pros and cons. One benefit is that it is relatively mindless, even relaxing, reading. Also, this makes it easy to listen to as an audiobook without being too distracting from other activities like a daily commute. But it doesn't provide the curious mind with the mental stimulation of an Asimov or Heinlein. That is a possible drawback Final warning is that while most of the violence is pretty standard fare, PG-13, sci-fi fare - the later books up that ante with cold blooded killings that may not suit some readers or parents of potential readers.
