Those of you still following GBS know that there is an AG motion for class certification of the author class, to which Google recently provided a contest citing a survey of authors indicating that a majority did not subject to snippet view.

Google motion, Februrary 8 2012:
http://amlawdaily.typepad.com/guild10.pdf

Below is a url for Pamela Samuelson's most recent submission to the Court on behalf of named academic authors, suggesting that the interests of academic authors are wholly distinct from the majority of the authors in AG's membership, and certainly those named as typical of the class in AG's submission. (posted on scribd with her permission).

Samuelson submission:

http://www.scribd.com/doc/81573927/Academic-Authors-Letter-to-Judge-Chin-Feb-2012-Samuelson

"Most significantly, their decision to continue the litigation shows that they do not share academic values, goals or objectives. None of us would have initiated a lawsuit against Google for copyright infringement in the first place because it scanned our and other academic authors’ books for purposes of indexing their contents and serving up snippets in response to search queries. ... By pursuing this lawsuit as a class action in the aftermath of the failure of the proposed settlement and not reaching a new settlement, we believe that the proposed class representatives and the associational plaintiff in this case are engaged in actions that are antithetical to the interests of academic authors who would be swept into the class that the plaintiff’s lawyers are seeking to have certified.

"Not only do we believe that Google should not be found liable for copyright infringement for the scanning of in-copyright books from major research library collections, but we believe that the plaintiffs and their lawyers are asking for remedies that we find deeply troubling and counter to our interests. We would not, for instance, want the court to issue an injunction to require Google to stop scanning books from library partner institutions. An injunction that would forbid indexing copyrighted works and making snippets of information available to the public raise serious First Amendment concerns and are contrary to the values of promoting broad access to information that academic authors share.

"Nor do we think it is reasonable to seek statutory damages for each of the 12 million or so in-copyright books that Google has scanned from research library collections. "

Khan Academy = Youtube videos that taught kids math and science; that didn't surprise me.

Khan Academy + metrics + classroom integration = better teachers; now that's mind-blowing.
This, says Matthew Carpenter, is my favorite exercise. I peer over his shoulder at his laptop screen to see the math problem the fifth grader is

I'm looking for really good (ie no glossy pictures needed) Asian vegetarian cookbooks (besides julie sahni); non-Indian cusines welcome. Well versed in J-cooking (e.g. temple cooking) so Southeast Asian or greater Chinese regions particularly welcome. Korean, Ceylon, Thai, Indonesian, etc. all good.

Thanks! I have the Solomon book and use it a look; she's particularly good on her home country (Ceylon). For Burmese, I'd look at that, although so far I have frankly not been impressed with the cookbooks I've seen.

Foggy tonight for the rise of the full moon over San Francisco, but it worked out pretty well. Here's a quick monochrome. The color images are going to take a little longer. Single exposure. Nikon D700 ISO 400 RAW 70-200mm f/2.8 lens at 116mm. 1.0 sec f/4.5. Noise reduction in Lightroom 3. Conversion to monochrome in Nik Software Silver Efex Pro 2.
