Introduction

Valerie Brown, an attorney, is an independent lobbyist associated with  TTP Government Relations ( http://www.njttp.org/) and a seasoned professional in federal and state government relations.  A non-profit executive, Ms. Brown served for nearly twenty years as Legislative Counsel for the New Jersey Bar Association, representing more than 20,000 lawyers and for two years as Chief Counsel for Legislation and Regulation for Legal Services of New Jersey, representing representing those from New Jersey - low income earners and consumers.  Prior to her representation of the legal community, Ms. Brown advocated on behalf of New Jersey’s K-12 educators and public colleges.  Her government relations career began as an analyst with the New Jersey State Legislature.

In addition to her admission to practice law in New Jersey and Pennsylvania, Ms. Brown is a registered Government Affairs Agent, and a NJ Supreme Court-trained mediator.   As a certified Executive and Leadership Coach through Georgetown University’s Leadership Coaching Program, she is principal of Lead Smart Coaching, LLC, specializing in leadership coaching of K-12 charter and independent schools. 

Ms. Brown’s writings on legislation and government relations have been published in the American Bar Association (ABA) Bar Leader and the American Society of Association Executives (ASAE) Association Management Magazine.  She served on the West Education Law Reporter for more than ten years. Her most recent book, Lobbying for Lawyers, is co-authored with Gregory Nagy, Esq. and published by the Institute of Continuing Legal Education, 2010

As a lobbyist, Ms. Brown works with leaders, senior executives, organizations and teams who want access to government leaders to promote organizational and societal transformation.   Her charitable works include support for Right Sharing of World Resources, advancing grassroots projects for economic development worldwide.  Ms. Brown is married to John Strachan and is a long-time resident of Lambertville, NJ, now residing in New Hope, PA.

With a strong record of consistent results, Ms. Brown achievements include: • Expanding New Jersey judiciary by 36 judgeships; • Legalizing living wills in New Jersey; • Increasing penalties for the unauthorized practice of law; • Updating New Jersey’s adoption laws; • Strengthening the Prevention of Domestic Violence Act: • Updating New Jersey’s guardianship statutes; • Expanding divorce laws to allow for a new cause of action under irreconcilable differences; • Advancing New Jersey statutes on alternate dispute resolution; • Securing five million dollars in increased funding for Legal Services of New Jersey; • Organizing and leading ABA Lobby Day delegations to US Congress; • Writing a weekly column on legislation and regulation for the NJ Lawyer; and • Creating, organizing and facilitating numerous high-profile events, including association-wide town-hall style meetings, conferences, and educational training sessions on lobbying for lawyers and other professionals.
