"Gone now in a field of dreams...
Gone where all dreams go..."
Comes back to close the loop on "Sky Blue"'s "Rain City"...?

It appears that my previous comments disappeared somehow, so I'll try to elaborate more on what may be required now:

"Extreme Metal 2: the slower side of extreme": the first "Extreme Metal" episode focussed on the extremely fast and heavy side of extreme metal, and made a grave omission on the extremely slow and extremely "un-heavy" side of metal. Consider those who, inspired by Black Sabbath, persisted in creating the 'slow dirge' feeling - Sleep and Pentagram are the prime examples. Those who were persuaded that they could suffocate their listeners were in the vein of Thergothon. Others added a tinge of gothic to the sombre  atmosphere (My Dying Bride, Anathema) to yield picturesque soundscapes - Paradise Lost, the innovators who pursued their experimentations with Depeche Mode / Sisters of Mercy inspirations without loosing their deeply melancholic tone. In snail-pace metal, other worthy examples are Yob or beat-less Sunn(((0)))...

Some time before that, the likes of Skyclad ventured out with non-metal/wind instruments from their ancestry to give a really bucolic tint to their sound - folk metal, later followed by the likes of Orphaned Land who blended in their local folk instruments to give thoroughly entertaining albums... Nowadays, bands like Alcest or Gnaw their Tongues regularly produce best-of-year metal albums...

Ah, I have to stop somewhere.

But still there are these very much "un-trve" metal bands which created strongly followed undercurrents like prog metal, djent, metalcore/deathcore/emo-whatever-core..

But there are also geniuses like Devin Townsend and Ihsahn... Devin started out as a vocalist for shred-master Steve Vai and then ventured out on his own to give fantastic albums under Strapping Young Lad, Ocean Machine and then the Devin Townsend Band; Ihsahn was the guitarist/vocalist of the mighty Emperor, but then drifted out to his own project which is not scared of adding wind-instruments into his own brew of blackish metal...

And then there is the "post-metal" etiquette glued to formidable bands like Neurosis (first with a slap-in-the-face album 'Souls at Zero'), and then Isis, and then Russian Circles with improbable chord progressions...
ah! I'm forgetting many others probably, but that's ample proof of how dynamic metal is as genre - and I don't many other genres where people give so much importance to bands' albums (not singles) and on their live performances as proof of their integrity...

Dear Mr Dunn, you sure have a career opening in front of you! :-)

+Herbert From Itally Agreed 100%. These form part of Dunn's "pre-metal" era creations that contributed someway or another / indirectly to the sound and feel of today's metal. Most of the tracks you mentioned are really very enjoyable!

Even if Dunn just mentions Doom metal - extreme not only means extremely fast, but also extremely slow, not only very heavy, but also very ethereal - I did not feel bad at all: this 'extreme' label so aptly encompasses the widest, most diverse of sounds, from Devin Townsend's 'Physicist' to Yob or Sunn((0)), from Gnaw Their Tongues to Alcest...
I have to agree that the genre that was initially omitted is actually the one that's the most sustainable over all the others which have already peaked. What a very well constructed conclusion!

Unbelievable! I thought tracks from 'Ocean Machine' had been long forgotten and buried... And they worked the background videos to illustrate very concisely the song's concept...
Can we dream of 'Voices in the Fan' some day...?

"...he is rather random, and doesn't honor his fills live anyways!"

May I humbly suggest a correction here, please? "He NEVER honors his fills live..."

This drummer keeps mistaking the fills from 'As I Die' with those of 'Gothic'... The more I see him, the more I dislike his presence in Paradise Lost.

Individual track rating:

Hmm... I've been repulsed by 'Ghost', attracted to 'Deconstruction', and hooked on Ocean Machine / Punky Bruester  and all SYL + DTB albums for ages. But this one shines through all his previous productions, and I'd give the following ratings on 'Sky Blue':
"Rejoice"  3/5
"Fallout"  3/5
"Midnight Sun"  4/5
"A New Reign"  5/5
"Universal Flame" 4/5
"Warrior" 3/5
"Sky Blue"  4/5
"Silent Militia"  4.5/5
"Rain City"  5/5
"Forever"  4/5
"Before We Die" 5/5
"The Ones Who Love"  5/5
I wonder how he intends to play gems like 'Rain City' or the 'Silent Militia' crowd-mover in live settings...

One of the very few mainstream people who have the intelligence of not making the "dark = negative" amalgam.
Mr Marino, you crushed it - wow!
