1. Practice heightened presence.
When you let yourself be completely immersed in a given situation, you'll be able to fully absorb the positives. If your mind is focused on work while you're out with friends, on the other hand, then even time that's supposed to be relaxing is not entirely enjoyable.

Q: What makes the court reporting profession so interesting?
A:Everyday is something new. One day you might have a deposition about someone who got their hand caught in a corn picker, and you have an engineer who knows all about that machine. The next day you might have a doctor’s deposition, and the next day an accident deposition. So there’s always something new around the corner. Everyday is different...

In the past few years, the federal government has emphasized the importance of keeping protected health information (PHI) and other protected or confidential information out of the hands of the ill-intentioned. As many of you may have experienced, it doesn’t take much for email accounts to be hacked.

The standard way of sending deposition transcripts — using email attachments — is now deemed risky. Faced with debilitating fines for HIPAA violations, court reporters have moved to using encrypted web portals or cloud transfers.

Not just for law firms, but definitely crucial for them: Experts say that law firms can give themselves the best protection by first hiring outside companies to perform vulnerability assessments. Once law firms know where they are most at risk, they can better determine where they need to spend money and effort, such as on training their employees and buying insurance to help cover their costs for the likely occurrence of a major data breach.

- Recycling paper, plastic, glass and aluminum in the office.
- Using electronic messaging and email rather than inner-office paperwork.
- Ensuring our office equipment is Energy Star certified.
- Turning off our lights/computers when not in use.
