Every player is also implicitly a collector if they own the cards they play with. Cards are scarce resources with utility and an insane aftermarket / secondary market value.
Players are screwed bevause although You may not be interested or care about collecting (I once bought Italian-language Mana Drains because they were $20 cheaper and still tournament legal), but you must still compete in the same micro economy with people who do want to collect.
Collectors are screwed because the statistical rarity of an individual card gets inflated heavily if that card has a particular utility in the playing environment. (The 3 cards you need to complete your set of Legends all cost 100-200 apiece because the rarity is inflated by players that need 4 copies each of them).
Well played, WotC.
